Utrogestan
« on: November 29, 2022, 08:26:35 PM »

Hi guys.. I’ve started taking oestrogel 1 pump (starting slow to see how it goes) and utrogestan 200mg from
Days 15-26.. but I’m absolutely hating the utrogestan.. I’ve taken it every which way possible and after 8 days I had to give in as I was feeling so low and argumentative I knew another 4 days would have sent me over the edge.
Can I just take for 7/ 8 days do you think? I think I’m taking too much progesterone for the amount of gel.. do I up my gel by another pump (making it 2 pumps per day) and do I wait for my withdrawal bleed to start before upping my dosage? I’m not interested in a coil.. I’ve tried that and didn’t get on with it.
I have always been sensitive to progesterone in combined pills.. doesn’t matter what make it always makes me depressed and horrible. Any advice would be gratefully received xx

Hi Kelloggs

Big welcome to you  :)

You can reduce the dosage to 100mg over the same time span.

I’m afraid it’s a balancing act between estrogen and progesterone mood wise. Too much progesterone can make you feel depressed and too much estrogen can cause anxiety.

I’m afraid I can’t offer much of an opinion on the withdrawal bleed but I hope other members will be along who can.

But I can say if you’re taking too much it can can potentially  cause depression, not anxiety.

Hi Kelloggs

It’s a very common problem. Marchlove is right when she says too much P causes depression and too much O causes anxiety, this is something I have found and it is indeed a balancing act.

The best regime I have found is 7 days x utrogestan vaginally. You do need regular scans to make sure it is sufficient. Unfortunately you still have to go through prog withdrawal, but at least you get more good days than bad.

Let us know how you get on x

You need to be careful going off-piste as there is an increased risk of cancer if the womb lining builds up. The manufacturer (who I assume has done the most testing) says 200mg both orally and vaginally. Newson says 100mg x 12 days if used vaginally (probably safe at low/med doses but not sure how much testing she's done at high doses). Less than this if you have a proper bleed each month (because of your own progesterone) it's *probably*OK but if not then please do it with the agreement of your doc and with regular scans. I think you can get private scans for around £80.

You should use the minimum amount of oestrogen that controls your symptoms. I get fatigue on utro and tried adding oestrogen to counteract it, it didn't work for me. The other thing you may find is that utro may be easier to tolerate as you head towards meno and your own production of progesterone decreases. I used to be wiped out for 12 days, now I'm OK til day 8 and the last 4 days are nowhere near as bad as they were (still using 200mg x 12 days as the one time I tried 100mg I didn't bleed).

Upping O to counteract negative side effects of P didn’t work for me either x

100mg over 12 days is my trick vaginally as I had the same reaction when taking 200mg orally. Been much better since taking 1 vaginally, just have to cope with the natural stuff being there though and no amount of estrogen seems to get rid of the blues that come with the natural progesterone peaks.  Hope you manage to work it out, it really does make you feel awful.
