Thank you for sharing this. My friend waited ages for a gynae appointment. She requested it to be with a female. She got an appointment with a man and cancelled it and now has to wait all over again.  >:(

I prefer to have a man examine me and to be honest, there are so few female practitioners at Consultant level she may have a long wait.  Any1 can request a Nurse to be present.  We shouldn't have to request, it should be offered, however.

It doesn't help when we throw spanners in the works regarding our preferences about gender but for one reason or another some women will want to be treated by women only.

Overall the situation is worrying, no matter how advanced we are in modern medicine, less and less people want to go into health care!
A friend has all the money the NHS can throw at her, but it's a hell of a job to recruit and keep staff!

What I realised is that we do have enough gynaecologists, trained at least, but there’s not enough jobs for them.

I do wonder where this statement stems from  :-\.  There are some ethnic groups where a woman cannot see a male medic for any type of consultation.  It worries me that many women are sitting quietly but in pain due to their cultural rules .

I also meant to thank you for the article  :thankyou:

Now - what can we do about this situation?  1 person ain't going to have an impact on the Health Secretary  :-\ as there aren't enough medics in most of the specialities  :'(

That is an interesting statement to make isn't it, would like that to be more clarified.................

Thank you for posting this.
My area has actually closed the gynaecology waiting lists to new patients in both local hospitals because the lists were 3 years long!

Now we have to get treatment at a local private hospital but the NHS still pays. However, the private hospital waiting lists funded by the NHS are still 9 months long for a consultation without treatment. I could get an appointment within a week if I could pay privately but I can't afford to.

I'd rather be seen by a female because I find medical examinations stressful & embarrassing but I won't have that option or I might never get seen!

I wonder whether the Consultants are the same as who work in the NHS doing private work too?  If so they are part time in the NHS which is why there are waiting lists because the consultation slots aren't filled.  It saves the NHS money.

And the case is that those who can afford to go private are growing in numbers which would mean longer waiting times perhaps in both situations.
Most consultants usually divide their time between NHS and Private work.

I worked for a Consultant who didn't want to do private work, on his day's off he tended his rare breed sheep.
