Pharmacist refused to dispense Prescription
« on: October 19, 2022, 11:19:46 AM »

HRT really is a constant fight it seems.

I have managed to get my GP to prescribe Oestrogel, 1 pump pack and 200mg Utrogestan on a monthly cyclical regime.  First prescription in September and then I have the October repeat in hand to take to the local pharmacy (same one as last month).  The pharmacy had the gel but not the Utrogestan so I was asked to come back next day.  I sent Hubby down to collect and he rung me to say the pharmacist would like to speak with me.  The pharmacist said she was not happy to dispense the 200mg Utrogestan (vaginal capsules) for HRT use and would I authorise her to speak to my GP about it.  I refused as I did not want the pharmacist to create a potential problem with the GP prescribing the HRT. I have been 'fighting' since earlier this year to get onto HRT!  My GP has been directed to prescribe this regime by a Consultant - that information was written on the prescription,  so there would be no use talking to the GP and I explained that. I also pointed to various documentations online by the British Menopause Society and even though I could explain the reasoning behind the prescription, the pharmacist said she was within her rights to refuse to dispense.

Anyway after about 10 minutes going around in circles, I asked for my prescription back.  But I can't have it back because the Oestrogel has been dispensed, has left the pharmacy and can't be returned so I have 'lost' the Utrogestan part of the prescription.

Moral of story - always and I mean always, get each item prescribed on a separate prescription.

Has anyone else had problems with getting the Pharmacist to dispense their prescribed medicine?

I am so confused by the pharmacist. You have a prescription from your GP who knows you better then the pharmacist does and they do not have the medical knowledge a GP has. How frustrating for you to have this happen. If you send a message to your GP to issue another prescription then I am sure they will do this. I would not use this chemist again.

Hi can you have the 100mg Utrogestan instead? The 200mg are not licensed for HRT, only fertility treatment. I know that doesn’t make sense !

Well apparently according to the pharmacist, they have more knowledge on the medicines than the GP's. She also told me that the GP's only do about 4 months training on medicines, so the pharmacists are far more specialised and know a lot more.

I said to her once or twice in the conversation "I will never return to your pharmacy" :cuss:

Wow! That is so rude! What an odd thing to say. I am glad you will not be going there again. Shocking behaviour.

Exactly Dotty.  It does not make much sense to me.  I have put a request in to the GP for a replacement prescription for 2x100mg capsules per day for 14 days of the month.  I'll find out later whether I'm going to get it or have another fight on my hands  ::)

Hi the 2 x 100mg should be fine as that’s a normal prescription for HRT.

Why didn't the Pharmacist know ?   :-\. as for GPs they go on many training courses during their working life.  As to Nurse Practitioners.

Well you couldn't make this up......

Just rung GP's surgery, they have re-issued the prescription to say "2x100mg micronised progesterone -30 capsules" no mention of Utrogestan for some reason. But they have sent it EPS to the very pharmacy I've had the issue with!!

I have my GP record set to NO Electronic Prescription Service.  I have not asked for this pharmacy to be on my record. I have just given the GP's receptionist a right mouthful.

Oh and the pharmacy isn't open this afternoon, it closes early today.
That's something to look forward to tomorrow then!
