Ear fullness
« on: September 04, 2022, 10:40:38 AM »

Does anyone experience ear fullness with hormonal issues???

This is how my peri started, along with vertigo, and each time I change my dose of progesterone its like my inner ears swell.

Just wondering if anyone else experiences ear issues clearly linked to hormonal change??? Feel a bit alone and freakish with this random symptom. But it is quite debilitating. Today I feel my ears very full, almost sore and aware of it when I swallow.

I should add there is nothing ever found medically. I've had full checks, also mri and ct.

Thanks x

I sometimes feel my ears are blocked and I cannot hear properly. I am sorry you are feeling alone. It is a horrid feeling.

We're having a good chat today flossie  ;D

That's interesting. Can you pinpoint what causes yours. I don't think my hearing is affected. It's just quite obscure. I'm wondering if it's a histamine reaction. But it certainly doesn't seem food related, defo hormonal.

We sure are!  ;D

I have no idea what causes mine. It just comes out the blue and then goes. Just like sometimes my eyes are blurry and I feel I cannot see as well. I think there are a lot of odd things that hormones cause but they are not reported.

Interesting.

Yip, so many odd things. I've had some weird things over the last 8 months whilst trying prog only. Most of them pass. But the ear thing seems to be recurrent for me. It drives me mad.

I ended up with nose surgery as a, result of all this peri nonsense and my original ear /dizziness  ;D. Luckily the nose surgery has helped, well, my nose and allergic reactions  ;D.

Oh gosh, it must have been awful if you needed to have surgery. I am so pleased the surgery helped. I can see why it is driving you mad. It is horrible to feel such things and there to be no apparent reason.

I'd always had issues with my nose, I lived with it. I think it's just the only thing they could find when I was sent down the ENT route.

Be interesting to hear if anyone else feels they get swollen ears. When it's bad, like this weekend, it makes me feel like I'm ill with a virus. But I never am.  :o

I have had this ear fullness feeling off and on for about 6 years now, like you at start of peri journey. I have seen a number of ENTs,GPs about it and been investigated at the hospital. Had MRI scans, hearing tests ect... I have been given dx of probable menieres disease but have never experienced vertigo or dizziness which are classic menieres symptoms so I don't think it is that. I specifically asked an ENT consultant could it be related to hormones and menopause and he basically laughed at me and said no. I think it is, though like you. Never had any problems before age of 50. Really annoying at times although I feel it is improving since it all started.

Hey fedfan. Nice to meet someone in same boat - although not nice fur you.

Totally agree - I never mention hormones about it now. They think you're bonkers.

Can u spot any triggers with yours? What stage are you at in meno? I'm still peri and trying prog only, which it seems can make your estrogen receptors more sensitive when changing dose. So I think mine is some sort of histamine or swelling reaction to estrogen.

I believe mine will improve on e through meno and less fluctuations. But I could be way off the mark with this...!!! X

Hi CrispyChick,
I have not had a period for 2 years now. and I'm nearly 56. I have recently re started HRT. Tried it about 4 years ago and was on a combined tablet elleste duet, took that for a year mainly to see if it would help ear fullness problems and insomnia, came off it after a year as was finding it hard to get due to shortages. Then came pandemic and we relocated . After experiencing some more menopause symptoms-VA I am back on HRT-this time gel and progesterone tablet and ovestine cream. Still experiencing ear problem though. Difficult to know what  triggers it as it seems to be there most of the time but seems to ramp up after eating and sometimes after exercise.

So wierd. I was recently talking to a friend and she says she also experiences periods of fullness, like her ear is blocked but then it clears randomly. She is 57 and been on HRT for a few years. Its never really mentioned as a symptom although tinnitus is, which I also experience abit.
Very puzzling. Fingers crossed it will eventually fade away

Yep.  It's a common feeling for me, sometimes accompanied with tinnitus.  A wriggle with a small finger can stop it .......... briefly  ::). Like swimming under water?

yes had this for some months in bouts - had a bout recently with flare up of dry eye and sinusitis and felt dreadfully whoozy, bit wobbly and nauseous. Started really badly in last few months along with other nasty meno symptoms its all amount the oestrogen levels dropping.    Hate it as feels like I have a virus or flu (head congestion) all the time.  My friend is in post meno and she has the rhinitis and tinnitus and seeing ENT clinic to rule things out but she started with it after stopping oral HRT after a heart attack.     All membranes seem to dry out.....  oddly though I've not (as yet!!) had too much problem with VA... but am using Vagifem to keep it at bay...

As oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry:  inside and out; including deep in the ears and nostrils.

Hi,
I’ve started to have a really bad headache out of blue 7 months ago. Went for ct scan and was given amitriptyline for migraines. Little did I know it was my hormones. After a moths or so it’s gone down to my ears . Had fullness and pain in one of both ears. Left ear constant tinnitus and righ ear feeling of bubbles passing through. Felt like some kind of sinusitis . I’ve been on 4 lots of antibiotics. In the end went privately to see ENT. He said there is nothing wrong with my sinuses or ears. Had MRI of my head and medication for pressure in my ears . Sometimes feeling like I’m under the water . Or have water in my ears … it’s been going between my had and ears. Started HRT ( I’m 44 and my bloods shown that I’m in menopause) and first two weeks on oestrogen only my headache and ears get soo bad. The two weeks on progesterone it’s feels better. Only on my second months on hrt and still have it but not constant. I’m so happy to read here that someone else has ear problems, because it is so debilitating. I hope that with time it goes away and we get a break . 👍💪💪
