Hot flushes and sweating - does it get worse?
« on: August 24, 2022, 01:56:28 PM »

Hi all,

I have been postmenopausal for 8 years now and a few months ago, I noticed my symptoms like hot flushes started reducing in frequency and intensity, but past couple of months it started again, with more sweating than before. I never really was a heavy sweater. Now I just get drenched a few times a day. Has anyone experienced that spike in symptoms before it all stopped or am I likely to be stuck with this for years again?

After 8 years postmeno I would have thought that hormones have stabilised.  Maybe for some women it takes a lot longer for this to happen.  8 years postmeno is such a long time to still have sympyoms.

I am 59 too, I didn't get heavy sweats before, just the radiating heat thing. The sudden heavy all over sweating is a new thing. I thought I was getting over this, and then it started again but with a vengeance. It is so uncomfortable especially in the hot weather isn't it. Hopefully it's a last push before it dies for you as well! :)

I wish that was so, I know someone who has been experiencing menopausal symptoms for ages, she is 69 now and she still is getting hot flushes. I hope I won't carry on that long. I am 59 and I don't fancy another 10 year of this!

Yes,sadly hormones can take much longer to stabilise, there's no limit,I had a ultrasound of my ovaries a year back and she said they were still going strong  :o

Oh dear, that's must be disheartening! When you think you've had enough and those two little things are still going Hey we're not done yet!! My GP doesn't follow up on any of this, I don't have a gyno, I just go with the flow. Tried HRT twice, it didn't work out for me, so I am just going through it and hope it just settles soon.

That's me too,not on HRT either and kinda just riding the storm, anxiety and panic attacks were crippling a few years back but they have definitely lessened so fingers crossed,it should settle for you, hopefully sooner rather than later x

It's not easy for everyone is it. I have friends who had symptoms for 6 months and that was it, others say no symptoms at all. I'm with you with the panic and anxiety. I had both before, and my whole life, but they intensified so much a couple of years ago, I thought I was going mad. I was also depressed. That was why i tried HRT but that just wasn't for me. Things are a bit better now, if only I didn't feel like a sweatbag all the time, it would be grand!

I'm still getting hot flushes having started menopause at 48 ..... I'm now 70 and understand that this could continue for another 10 years but

                                                                       I HOPE NOT

Hi Coldlittleheart, I suffered 9 years post meno of horrible hot flushes thinking they would just go away..(along with all the other awful symptoms..).

So at age 62 I'd finally had enough and asked my Gp to try HRT ..he said I was too old >: so I asked to be referred to my local NHS meno clinic, as I'd read up on my rights beforehand. The consultant there told me I was likely to be "one of the unlucky ones" and put me on HRT straight away, sent a letter to my GP and my treatment is now on repeat prescription at no cost to me.

I have tried various combinations over the last 3 years, mainly Oestrogel or Estradot patches together with Utrogestan, including Tostran gel and Vagifem, which so far seems to be ok. I am now trying Evorel conti, as I thought totally transdermal would be better at my age.

I have tried a break from it a few times, but the flushes have come back after one month. So I am intending to stay on it as long as I can. I tried every natural remedy but nothing helped.

I hope you find a solution that suits you and that you are one of the lucky ones and they finally settle down! x

Thanks all for the replies :)

I have tried HRT a couple of times and it wasn't for me - the ones that helped also made my hair fall out (more than it already was) so that was counterproductive as it caused me increased anxiety and low mood, which was primarily why I asked for HRT in the first place.

I'll just ride the storm. and hope it eventually goes away.

Ouch you've been dealt a tough hand, I hope things settle down for you sooner than later!

Jaypo, what fans do you mean? I'll have a look. Thing is I get flushes ALL over my body, might be a bit awkward to strip and fan myself while out and about  ;D
