Eating prunes to counter loss of bone density
« on: August 09, 2022, 01:02:29 PM »

Not sure how well known this is (I have only recently been alerted to it by my daughter) so apologies if it's preaching to the converted, but there is evidence that eating 50g of prunes per day is beneficial to bone health.

I've just ordered a bumper bag of prunes and started today. I quite like prunes, but 50g of them is actually more than I expected in terms of volume :) I intend to persevere - they were quite nice to have this morning with muesli and greek yoghurt. Good for the bowels, too!

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else finds it interesting.

Thank you for sharing this. I had no idea prunes help with our bones. Hopefully you will not have to run to the bathroom too much.  ;D

Good links Evie & great to see new research on this.  Another regular ;) prune eater here - for some years - due to oesteopenia.  For anyone who wants to do all they can to protect their bones & also needs a little help to get moving, they're win, win!

Like you, I also enjoy the taste so it's no sacrifice.  :)

I wonder if plums are equally as good  ??? They are after all the same thing, just not dried.

I also wonder about other fruit  ;D I mean, if it's about antioxidants, lots of fruit and veg has that in it. Just because they only studied prunes doesn't mean only prunes are magic. Although we don't know if others work.

The only thing to say about prunes, is they are very high in fructose, being dried fruit. Dried fruit is said to be the same as eating sugar really, allegedly. That was why I wondered if plums would be as good, since I'd rather eat them fresh. Although I guess not available year-round...

joziel I think with prunes it's more than just their antioxidant properties.  Their boron & Vit K content are thought to help wrt bones.  Yes high in sugar, but they're classed as complex carbs, I think by virtue of their fibre content.  Eaten with a good source of protein like Greek yoghurt, as Evie does, also spreads the glycaemic load, preventing blood sugar spikes.

I also buy fresh plums, the tart, bullet hard ones meant to be home ripening, halve & bake them with a little Stevia in each pit.  Lovely cold with mild Greek yoghurt.

Organic prunes have now been added to the monthly Amazon Subscribe and Save  ;D

Is it 6 a day we are supposed to eat? I think I can easily manage that.

Morning all and I'm glad to have been able to share. Thank you to Wrensong for the extra information - very interesting to know about the advantage of eating them with greek yoghurt - I wasn't really sure what else to have with them, so it's good to know I inadvertently stumbled on a good combination!

I had been a bit worried about the whole dried fruit/sugar thing, as Joziel mentions, so also good to know about them being classed as complex carbs. I'm definitely including them as a part of a meal in any case, rather than an extra - I managed to lose a few stone last year and have so far managed to keep the weight off, so don't want to be derailed by prunes  ;D

Depends on how big they are joziel as to how many a day, if you want to be precise about it.  I find they vary so much depending on where I buy them, so I weigh out a portion - 70g if I think I've got room, 50g if not  ::)  OMG, how did I get here, weighing prunes in me PJs at 6am ?  ;D

Ooh, look out for stones  :o.  When it says pitted prunes on the packet, they lie.

joziel, just noticed your post on another thread saying you've been on a low histamine diet (that hasn't helped symptoms).  I'm sure you'll be well aware of this, but thought I should flag up in case anyone else thinks they may be histamine intolerant, that both dried fruit & yoghurt are foods we're usually advised to avoid on a histamine reducing diet.

I do hope you manage to get to the bottom of your symptoms.

Thanks wrensong. I think almost every food that exists is a no-no on a low histamine diet, so prunes are the least of the worries really.

I don't know if histamine is causing the issues I'm having, because a low histamine diet didn't work. It might be that it wasn't enough whilst also taking estrogen. So I haven't ruled out histamine as a cause yet.

I know joziel, it's quite a comprehensive list to avoid  :-\ & I found it difficult when I tried it some years ago.

Sorry to derail the thread Evie, just felt sensible to raise the histamine issue as quite a few of us have had to consider that as cause of persistent symptoms & I'd hate anyone to feel worse for prunes or yoghurt!

Good advice and didn't know this.  I like prunes and plums but eating 50g EVERY day would seems a bit much in terms of toilet visits!
