My mother - 81-year old - on HRT and bleeding
« on: July 28, 2022, 07:57:14 PM »

Dear All,

I wonder whether in this post-menopausal section, anyone can share their views on something: my mum, 81 year old on HRT due to her osteoporosis, has had 10 days of spotting and three days ago was a heavy vaginal bleeding for a day. She immediately rang her gynaecologist (we're in Italy) and she's having an internal scan on Wednesday next week. I'm extremely worried, but am also trying to keep her calm. Does anyone know if at that age, polyps/fibroids can cause this much bleeding? Or should we begin to worry something is seriously wrong? Has anyone had any such experiences with relatives?

Warmest thanks for any feedback or experiences you may want to share. Wishing you a nice evening!

Italy - now there's a place to visit!  How is your Health Care there?

Any unexpected bleeding should be investigated so well done that she is getting a scan.  Does she have any other bothersome symptoms, i.e. weight loss ?  Aches and pains in the bones?  It could be a fibroid .........

Let us know how she gets on!

Cocobra, can you tell us what HRT your mother is taking and what her bleeding patterns normally are like - I assume she's on a continuous rather than a sequential regime?

CLKD - Italy's national health system is generally excellent!

Dear both, thanks so much for your help and views. She has not lost any weight as far as I can see, but she said she felt swollen in the lower belly: hard to tell since she’s got her own belly fat!
She’s on Femoston and I think it’s continuous. But she no longer has routine bleeding so that is what is worrying. Her gynaecologist is on vacation and most others are. Luckily we have not far from her house an A&E for gynaecology and obstetrics so we’ll go there tomorrow morning. I tried to convince her to go today but the bleeding is now very sparse and she’s half thinking this can wait till tomorrow… anyway, with 40 degrees in the afternoon probably best to go in the morning!
And yes, the Italian nhs is luxurious compared to the uk: as an Italian who’s now lived in London for a little over 10 years, I can confirm this. And even privately an ultrasound is half the price of what you are charged in the uk, but then in the uk before you know it you’ll  be charged for the air you breath! I hope not but …

All best to everyone and thanks so much again!

Dear all,
A&E gynaecology was fantastic. They did a transvaginal scan and took a biopsy but no results on the latter until 17 August. The scan showed an abnormally thick endometrium, normal for younger women, not for those in their 80s! Then I discovered today that her own gynaecologist put her on HRT for almost 40 years but never did a transvaginal scan to check the endometrium 😱 I’m truly shocked. Needless to say I’m still worried but perhaps the cause may simply be that abnormal thickness and she needs to recalibrate her HRT doses…
Has anyone had any experience with that?
Again warmest thanks for your views… this forum is such an incredible resource 😊

Has your Mum moved round a lot ........ did she see the Gynae regularly?

I expect that advice will be given once the results are back.  If your Mum feels otherwise OK, will she stay on a regime?

Hello again everyone,
She hardly moves … but yes, that’s true: no point in getting so anxious before the biopsy results come through… she does she her gynaecologist every 2 years but still, I find shocking he’s never done any checkups! Will keep you posted!

All best, everyone

Morning.  How's the weather?  Warm again and temps expected to rise.

Problem with not moving - it becomes a vicious circle, can't move, won't move as it's too much effort  :-\

You should find out first if it's sequi or conti. I'd expect it to be conti at her age in which case she needs either more progesterone or less oestrogen. Her doc sounds good so hopefully will sort it out. We rarely get scans unless there's a reason to investigate. Most likely it's the build up that caused the bleed but if it's anything worse at least they've found it early. Fingers crossed.

Dear All,

many thanks again for all your attention and support. We got a bad diagnosis yesterday morning: quite agressive cancer of the endometrium. Blood test today, magnetic resonance tomorrow and CT scan the day after to see the stage of the illness and whether it's spread. If it has not they want to operate ASAP and by end of September at latest. My mum is shell-shocked. I am scared, yes, but as a widow of a man who died of incurable cancer before 50 years of age I am an expert at this situation so I'm moving like a military general and the Italian health system is moving quickly and is absolutely fantastic...
Fingers crossed it's operable! All best

Cocobra this is a horrible thing to have happened but the Italian health system sounds truly wonderful.
Sending many many good wishes and hugs.
