Ear infection followed by thrush with same symptoms
« on: June 30, 2022, 06:10:55 PM »

For the past 2 weeks, I have had persistent tinnitus with loss of hearing, intermittent earache and inflammation in the left ear. This isn't new for me but, on previous occasions, it has always responded to AB eardrops or a course of Amoxycillin very quickly. This time no improvement despite having drops and tablets. I am inclined to blame this on the length of time it took to get any treatment.

I saw a GP again today. This GP says that the symptoms are now caused by thrush following my use of AB's. I am very sceptical because I would expect thrush to cause itchiness perhaps and possibly slight inflammation.

I am supposed to be going on a mini break to Berlin in 11 days from now but the GP today has said I can't go unless the tinnitus goes and my hearing returns (because of the flight).

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I wasn't aware that candida affects the ear  :-\: tongue, vagina - it thrives on sugars and is resident in the back passage.

Have U tried LIVE yoghurt?  It cleanses the digestive tract all the way through, helping regenerate good bacteria.

Candida auris (C. auris) is an uncommon fungus that can cause serious bloodstream, wound and ear infections. Candida auris infections can be more difficult to treat than other candida infections, as they are often resistant to antifungal medicines.7 Aug 2018

So I stand corrected.  Your GP should have prescribed appropriate treatment.  As for flying, did he offer to provide a certificate so that you can claim expenses etc. should you be unable to travel?

The GP has now prescribed something but it wasn't available from the pharmacy today. I have to collect it tomorrow.

I have just looked up the term candida auris and I doubt it is that. GP just said thrush.

I wasn't aware that candida affects the ear

My husband had thrush in his ear a couple of months back - I have to admit that the fact he had "fanny drops" to use in his ear caused a few giggles in our house 🤣 (mind you, he didn't give me an answer to the question of where he'd had his ear to get infected🤭)

Your GP is correct.  Candida is 'thrush', it also causes athletes foot and other fungal infections.  It is given different names depending on which part of the body is infected.

Yes I know that Candida is thrush. I am just not convinced that this is the cause of my symptoms. I have just discovered that another colleague developed the same symptoms at the time when mine started. She put it down to a virus and hasn't seen a GP. Maybe we have the same thing.

DH and I have deep itchiness in the ears, we call it 'spaniel ear'  ::).  He uses nivea cream at night, we can both be seen wiggling a little finger into an ear occasionally  >:(

MayB some appropriate ear drops might ease initial symptoms?

I don't have itchiness or only very minor. I have already tried eardrops, 2 different types. The symptoms which I want to clear are tinnitus and the partial loss of hearing.

Ears can be troublesome.  I have found that wriggling the ear will pop it, briefly  >:(.  Tinnitus for me is background, I have a ringing slightly off the back of my head on the left.  There is a UK based charity for advice.
