Anxiety and Sleep Issues
« on: June 14, 2022, 07:34:46 AM »

Morning everyone.

I'm a newbie, so I hope I'm posting everything in the right places!!

I just wondered I have only started on HRT last Saturday Estradiol 25 mcg patches twice weekly and Progesterone every night.

I'm about 4 years post meno and thought I had escaped everything. How wrong I was!!!!

In february of this year I developed tinnitus which has now thankfully gone, but previous to that was I having horrible anxiety and panic attacks.

I now have great difficulty in getting to sleep; can take me hours, once I'm there I'm fine.

My question is, will my sleep ever return to normal (I used to sleep like a baby) or can I just expect to be like this for the rest of my life?

I mean will the HRT help reduce my anxiety which I think in turn will help me sleep.

The anxiety associated with bed now is awful and I have terrible palpitations when I first get to bed also.

Can I also just say I think this site is fantastic, thanks for all the useful information and help

Hi disco girl :welcomemm:
I’m almost 6 years post menopause and started exactly the same regime as you 3 months ago (I’m due my first review on Fri)  :o
Your story could, in fact, be mine  ;)….
My palpitations (after this 3 month period) have stopped, my sleep is definitely better (getting decent quality sleep now) and I don’t have the terrible sweats anymore.  For me, my anxiety is still there (however is definitely improved).  Hoping, if BP is ok, that I can go up to evorel 50!
There will be more advice from the lovely ladies here. Everyone reacts differently and what works for one may not help another but I can only say that I could have written your post and can only offer you hope, based on my own experience.  :foryou:

Hi discogirl

Welcome to the forum!

Do you supplement with magnesium?
There have been some good threads on MM recently regarding the best form of magnesium to take for anxiety, so have a search around.
You can take the magnesium 1-2 hours before bed and hopefully this will improve things for you. X

HRT & therapy for anxiety both helped my long standing insomnia issues. As Marchlove said, magnesium can also be excellent for sleep issues, and anxiety. I took the glycinate one, have temporarily stopped as I had a new symptom to figure out but I do miss it! Good luck with everything. You’ll get lots of great advice here.

Hi everyone!!!

Yes I take magnesium complex, which is a combination of citrate, glycinate and malate with zinc and vitamin D3 in it.

I usually take the capsules with my tea as I was a bit worried about taking them too close to me taking my progesterone pill which I take at bed time, in case they interact with one another, but I've been informed that shouldn't be the case.

Thanks so much everyone x

Hi again

I’m not sure that’s a good complex for you.
Magnesium malate most folk take in the morning as it energises you.
Citrate is ok at night (good for constipation) but it’s the glycinate that is the one for anxiety and you need a good dose.
Also, it’s best to take vit d in the morning.
Zinc yes you should always take with a meal. X

Hi Marchlove,

Yes I read glycinate is good; I think I'll give that a go.

Anything to help with this insomnia; its just my brain won't switch off and anxiety is through the roof.

I'm hoping HRT will help and I will get some magnesium glycinate.

I thought I'd  sailed through the menopause and post meno was going fine until the beginning of this year so I'll try
anything to try and get my sleep back.

Thanks so much

There are some older threads on here about insomnia. What jumped out at me as seeming to be most successful - apart from magnesium were valerian and also melatonin. Melatonin is available on prescription in the UK if over 55 years otherwise it is readily available from the states. Biovea I think are a reputable company. Valerian is available from health food shops etc. Not sleeping is just awful, I hope you find something that helps. X

Hi Gnatty,

My daughter takes melatonin, so that is something I definately will think about trying.

I think I will get some magnesium glycinate; do you know what is the best bioavailable glycinate ?

Thanks so much x

Yes Gnatty, melatonin good for late onset sleep, so if that’s the case worth pursuing. Go low and slow.

Valerian I have no experience of.

I use Love Life supplements magnesium Bisglycinate Dosage 1-4 capsules . Start low and work up. Magnesium and vitamin d have a synchronous relationship, so be sure to take that in the morning.

Good luck xx
