The fitting is May 31st.
Getting itchy feet now, mainly around potential ‘settling in’ bleeding and spotting. I’ve got a school residential and a beach holiday looming. Bleeding would not be practical at all. That said, I could be bleeding from the HRT!

What to do?? Have the Mirena? Or start doubling up on utrogestan? I’ve done this for 2 nights as an experiment and have had a headache all day so far.

Ideally I want to try provera, but can’t get it prescribed.

The last ‘ bleed” was last Sunday, 28 days from the previous. It was virtually nothing, but the pmt and pain leading up to it, was horrendous.

Hi Nas. I’m sure you will be fine with the Mirena. Natural to feel a bit nervous though. I would think you will have far fewer side effects with it than with 200mcg progesterone. I’d be unable to move taking that dose daily and if it’s giving you headaches then that’s no good.  If you do have a bit of bleeding it will prob be very light I’m sure. If you don’t mind sharing, why will they not prescribe you Provera? The British Menopause Society has it listed as a suitable ‘adjunctive progestogen’ for those with uterus?

I know we're all different, but my spotting has been very light - I'll notice it a little on the loo roll when I wipe, but there is hardly anything.  I've not needed use a pad.  I totally understand your anxiety about it, but maybe a dark coloured swimming costume would be fine. 

I wonder what other folks have experienced regarding heaviness (or not) of spotting?

Flora, you are quite right, the BMS does list provera as a suitable progesterone for those with a uterus. The issue I  have is, past breast cancer history. When I was under Chelsea and Westminster, it was utrogestan daily, vaginally or double up, end of.

Now I’m under Liverpool women’s hospital and it’s the lowest dose of Oestrogen, but Mirena must be trialed, as deemed a better option than provera or norethisterone? Patient choice has gone out the window!

So, that’s where I am at. My next dilemma is going to be, that I need the 75 dose patch for symptom control. The 50 doesn’t suffice. Luckily I have some left over from a previous prescription, but will soon need a new batch.

It’s hard!

Peana , how long have you had your coil in?
Can you feel it?
Just spotting for you and no real bleeding?
Can you use a tampon for Mirena spotting/ bleeding?
Any aches or pains?

Hi Nas

I had a Mirena fitted on 8/03/2022. Previously I was on Utrogestan which did not control bleeding well on continuous regime so I took it sequentially.  My doctor did not want me on a sequi regime as I am 57, so I did try a continuous regime upping the dose from 100mg to 200mg.  This caused awful side effects.  When I had the Mirena fitted,  I initially had a few minor side effects but these have now resolved. I had sore breasts for about 3 weeks and very light spotting (no pad needed) for about 4 weeks. Am very pleased that I no longer have a monthly bleed xx

Out of curiosity, what was your bleed like when you took utrogestan sequentially?

You’re welcome   .  I have never had particularly heavy bleeds, before or after menopause. The problem with taking the Utrogestan continuously was that I had constant breakthrough bleeding, which was really irritating. When I took it sequentially, the bleeds were very similar to my periods. But even then, I would find that sometimes the bleeds would come before I had completed the 12 days of Utrogestan.  I am glad to see the back of that!  xx

Hi Nas, I had my copper coil changed for a mirena at the end of Feb, it so great not having irregular heavy bleeds - the spotting is much more managable.  If you're worried about the procedure being uncomfortable maybe ask if you can have an anesthetic or 'pre-load' with a pain killer 20 mins before your appointment.  Good luck.

I vaguely remember gynae saying that my cervix was ideal for a coil
( whatever that means!)

Nothing to lose and I really can’t continue with bleeding, albeit each month.

Utrogestan clearly isn’t effective and I need to find a progesterone that is.

Just wondering, will the coil sort the crampy period type pains I’m getting with the 75 patch?

I had hoped they would have gone, but no, they are still there. I suppose I have upped from 50 to 75 and before that, I was on the femeston conti.

Don’t really want to drop down to 50 again as the bladder issue will return i think.

I didn't have a lot of bleeding after the first few days post-Mirena insertion. Some watery discharge with dots of blood. Then it stopped and started again a few weeks later, with the same discharge, roughly in a period-type cycle. It wasn't much to talk about at all and much much better than the bleeding I had on continuous Utrogestan (with Oestrogel). I'm 1.5 years in now and have had no bleeding at all for months. Sometimes I feel premenstrual: low mood and some water retention, but that's it. No sore breasts, no real weight gain.

I took Nurofen plus before insertion. It wasn't that bad, even though I have a retroverted uterus and my cervix went into spasm.
