Newbie here and to hrt
« on: May 05, 2022, 12:03:03 PM »

Hi, I’m 47 and new to HRT. Currently on 19 days of estaderm 25mg patches and 12 nights of Utrogestan and 3 days in experienced pelvic pain, bloating, bladder pressure, frequent urination and horrible back and hip pain. These symptoms have not let up and since taking the Utrogestan the symptoms have gotten worse. From about my mid 30’s I started to experience bladder pressure, frequent urination and uti’s. On top of this I had ibs so can’t tolerate fibrous foods, legumes, lentils and barley and live a gluten free fodmap diet. Urology and gynae have both said that one kicks off the other but it’s definitely hormone related.
But now I feel I’m at a stand still with HRT. I was on a low dose contraceptive pill before starting HRT which slightly improved symptoms but then the peri symptoms took over, hence the reason I’m on HRT. I also had a transvaginal scan and blood tests before starting and all clear.
Have 3 weeks left of patches and then will see my GP.
Question is do I just continue in the hopes these symptoms ease or stop altogether. Wasn’t expecting a quick fix, but the pain is constant!

Hello joannepat21. Welcome to the forum. I have a lot of the symptoms you describe and I know how horrible it is. I have IBS and cannot tolerate gluten.  It could be you cannot tolerate utrogestan. Many people find that hard to tolerate. It is still early with the patches. I found it took me 3 months on the patches for any improvement.

I think it is very reassuring you have had scans and know all is okay. I personally would stop the utrogestan and see if there is any improvement. I am sure others will have more ideas for you.

The thing is, the symptoms started while just on the estrogen patches and have just continued whilst on Utrogestan. I either need to give it a bit longer, maybe increase dose or HRT is just not for me and resort back to synthetic contraceptive pill, which I don’t want to do.

I can see your point. I guess it depends if you can tolerate the symptoms while you are waiting to know if the side effects will go. I really hope they do.
