Patches - can you have too much oestrogen?
« on: April 14, 2022, 10:24:15 AM »

Hi All, I was on a 50 dose patch + progesterone 12 days of month and was starting to feel better by the end of the first 3 months but at the review with the GP I mentioned that the patches kept drying out so the doctor upped the dose to 75 and different brand. I have given it time but feel that the anxiety has returned and also worried that too much oestrogen might be a bad thing. I have little confidence in GP and am not sure whether she should have upped the dose or not? Has anybody got any experience of this? TIA

Hello Wheezybugs. When you say the patches have dried out, do you mean they do not last until they need to be replaced? Some people find changing them every 3.5 days works well. I cannot understand why your GP increased the dosage if you felt well on it. If you found the 50 kept you stable then I would carry on with that dose.

Yes, that! They sometimes fell off a day before which I told the GP and I asked whether that we because I needed more oestrogen which in hindsight was a stupid thing to say. She just immediately said oh well we could just try a higher dose which I assumed was because that was her considered opinion but now I am not so sure. I had just told her I was feeling better and wanted to continue on the HRT generally. I have spoken to her about the anxiety on the higher dose and she said oh just give it a bit more time on the higher dose and you can always go back to the lower dose if it doesn't get better. I feel a bit frustrated about my lack of knowledge on the issue. And hers! and that it seemed to be working and I have ruined it! Thanks for responding  :)

I find my patches tend to fall off unless I use tegaderm dressings over them. I do not think what you asked is stupid. You were not to know as this is all new to you. This is a learning curve so please do not blame yourself. Perhaps you would like to go back to using the 50 along with tegaderm dressings? I buy mine on amazon.

Anxiety can be a symptom of too much oestrogen as well as too little so I too would suggest going back to your original dose. It might be worth a search as there are threads on getting patchs to stick.

I would also add that I don't think there is a correlation between the dose of oestrogen and risk. In other words a higher dose doesn't correlate to a higher risk. I have seen this mentioned on here and also on the Menopause Taylor videos and elsewhere. So please don't worry, it's all about finding what suits you.
