Ear pressure
« on: April 12, 2022, 06:01:31 PM »

Does anyone have a feeling of ear fullness mostly in one ear but on a rare occasion be in both. It can cause intermittent pain in my ear, my hearing doesn’t seem as good, & now seem to be getting a bit of tinnitus thrown in as well. I had this on a couple of occasions in lockdown & on thinking I must have a ear infection had telephone appointments with my GP who prescribed antibiotics without seeing me, but it’s flaring up again so now staring to think it’s hormonal can also get a dull headache with it. Would be great full of any advice xx

Yes!!! I've got it right now. Mine is defo hormonal. Had it on avd off. I'm currently trialling progesterone only (in in peri) and I'm having massive ear fullness. It's horrible.

Thanks Poppy. Whats your situation??? At the beginning of all my peri problems, my ears were the worst and I had vertigo.

I notice someone has asked a question on an older similar post, which has bright it close to the top of this forum.

I am in total confusion with this, I haven’t had a bleed for 2 years 5 months & my symptoms are horrendous, I’ve actually been of work for 10 months as I collapsed & I’ve had dizziness & balance issues since this has had a huge effect on my anxiety & confidence, I just don’t feel safe in my own body. I am seeing ENT in May but that appointment has taken 11 months to get as it’s been cancelled twice. Ive asked for HRT but because of fibroids they won’t give me it as they said it would make them larger. So sorry I’ve gone off on a tangent but I finding it difficult to cope at the moment, this constant dizzy/swaying in my head, feeling spaced out & this full ear feeling is totally exhausting, I think I’m also just so tuned into it as well which isn’t good. Xx

Hi poppy, I think I replied to you not so long ago about this problem, I feel your pain as I'm the same, unfortunately hrt has not taken it away for me, mine can be constant for months then disappear for months, I get the whole being so tuned into the feeling as I do that and it definitely makes the feeling worse , hrt could help you as I've read that during menopause the eustachian tubes narrow causing congestion which in turn causes dizziness, but also estrogen in the form of hrt can cause congestion which it has for me, I constantly have a full/blocked left ear, sometimes with pain, it always makes me lightheaded and like you I don't feel safe, about the fibroids I wasn't allowed hrt because of them as estrogen can cause them to grow, but mine were extremely large and I had constant heavy bleeding and resulted unfortunately in a hysterectomy for me and at age 43 isn't the outcome I wanted, but that doesn't mean its the case for everyone some can use hrt with fibroids so long as it's monitored I think, maybe someone with fibroids using hrt might comment if they are small and not causing problems, have you had a recent scan to see how many or how big they are?, sorry I don't have a solution to your problems but just wanted to let you know your not alone, hopefully you will get some answers during your ENT appointment it could be something not related to hormones, best of luck and hoping you get some answers and much needed relief x

Ah. That's totally me. The word swaying, that's hit it on the head.

So mines gone up and down over the last 4 years. I've trialled various cobtraceotive pills...defo my ears felt better at times, but got other symptoms.

This particular week my ears are at their worst. Interesting timing with you posting.

So...

As I said I'm trialling prog only. I'm having to take it very slowly. Too fast and I get terrible wooziness and nausea. However, I've read a lot about low dose progesterone antagonising estrogen receptors until you build it up... I actually think that's what I'm experiencing just now. So I think it's high estrogen swelling my eustachian tubes.

In bloods I'm normal estrogen, but rock bottom progesterone.

I've been through ENT over the kast few years. I'm getting nose surgery as I have bad rhinitis avd sinus pressure too. Nothing more ever found and I actually think the sinus flairs are also hormonal.

Fibroids - estrogen makes them grow, right???  Although you're clearly meno on paper then (2 tears no period), but maybe get some bloods to check balance. I'm 99% sure mine is the imbalance. I'm not sorted yet though... And in fact, my ears are really bad this week, but I've had better on different trials, so it's defo hormonal.

This post could have been written by me. I have been having issues with my ears for last 6 years and experienced this full feeling mainly in my left ear but sometimes both. Also on occasion my hearing in left ear has worsened but then improves again. I have seen various ENTs in SW and now in NW England where I have relocated to and none of them have linked it to menopause. I have asked but link was dismissed. Problems began when I was 50 and perimenopausal. I have now not had a period for 2 years but ear fullness has not improved. One ENT thought it could be Menieres Disease but I do not have classic symptom of dizziness or vertigo. I am on betahistamine tablets to see if they will help and go back to ENT in 3 months time. I hope you get some relief soon

Yes that's absolutely my symptoms right now! My right ear has been muffled/ringing/buzzing and loss of hearing. I had a hearing test and all fine apart from my right ear looks dull. I have been prescribed antibiotics for 5 days as told it could be middle ear infection. Also sensations around my head, dizziness and feeling faint.
