Dizziness
« on: April 02, 2022, 04:57:52 PM »

Hi has anyone in perimenopause suffered with dizziness? I have an unsteady, woozy feeling whenever im moving around, sat or laid im fine. The feeling seems to come from sinuses most of the time and my eyes feel very dizzy/ tired. Im not sleeping too well, waking a lot in the night so I don't thinks that's helping. I initally had spinning vertigo last year a couple of time and its been since then. Been diagnosed with various ENT issues from different specialists before I started taking HRT but none seem to fit with what is happening so im wondering if it's just another symptom of perimenopause and it will settle once I've been on HRT longer. If anyone has, do you have tips that helped? Thanks

Yes!!! No tips I'm afraid, but I'm convinced it's hormonal. Mine goes up and down with my various hormonal trials - many contraceptive pills and now progesterone.

It is easier to cope with knowing its hormonal. I too had all the ENT tests going. I'm actually waiting on sinus surgery as I do have an issue there... But... It noticeably flares with my hormone trials!!!

Interestingly mine started not long after a vertigo bout and then it started with longer term vertigo. Horrific. Not vertigo now... Every cloud 🙄 more constant wooziness and motion sickness now.

What hrt are u on??? For how long?

Yeah mine is up and down through the month, although the last few months been mostly constant, its miserable. Only had a few true vertigo episodes luckily, its just the wooziness, it feels like im suffering with a cold, that foggy, woozy head you get when your ill but im not actaully ill if that makes sense with nausea now and again. Only been on HRT for a few weeks, and had this for over a year now so its maybe my own hormone fluctuations that causing it. On oestrogen patches and progesterone.

I've been bad for 4 years 😔
Yes, my conclusion is fluctuations. I'm currently under a bhrt clinic who checked my bloods. My estrogen was fine (not high) but my progesterone was non existent.

I have definitely had smoother periods on the pill, but each brought other side affects and it just overall made for a miserable experience.

Let me know if your hrt works. I could t take the estrogen, it made me worse. That said, I'm not doing well on prog either 🤔

What dose are you on??? I take it you don't feel worse??

Goodness 4 years, that not great, I've struggled and its been just over the 1 year mark so it must be awful for you. No I don't feel any worse as the recent bad patch started just before my last period and before I began HRT and has continued so I know its not because of HRT. One thing I noticed before beginning HRT was I seemed to be better when my natural oestrogen was high and worse when my progesterone was high, maybe coinsidence. Im on Evorel 50 oestrogen patches and progesterone 200 for 14 nights, however I haven't yet started the progesterone as the specialist told me to optimise my oestrogen first as I  could be progesterone intolerant. It's not good feeling like this every day as every movement makes me feel awful and no-one can give a definite reason why but it seems hormones could be the answer, its just what the right combination is now to fix it. Have you tried testosterone?

Another one here with near constant dizziness at the moment, it's been 3 weeks now.  I'm on Evorel Sequi, been on it 2 years, but since October 2021 I've increased the estradiol patch.  Been fine but some dizziness, nothing major, maybe one or two days before period.  But in the last 3 weeks it's been near constant with a lot of migraine thrown in.

going to get a blood test this week hopefully, but yes, it's miserable, it's particularly miserable for me because I worry it's serious and that the patches may be causing something.  But I'm telling myself that's unlikely and that I have bog standard migraine and labyrinthitis atm.

I'm going to try and do some meditation each night before bed and also I need to stop hunching my shoulders at the desk, seem to be doing that a lot at the moment which can't be helping.

I hope you feel better soon.  :)

Hi yes I’ve had dizziness that comes and goes throughout the month for at least a year now. I’m convinced it’s hormonal. Starting HRT helped a lot (although it’s now come back along with hot flushes etc so I prob need higher dose). I also have migraines which don’t help matters.

I try to ignore the dizziness and just allow it to pass and carry on. The more attention you pay it the more your brain gets hyper focused on how dizzy or not you feel. It’s really hard though! Just to let you know you’re not alone in this!

I also think that tiredness/poor sleep can cause this even if you don’t realise it. Also I get dizzy before a hot flush so some days so some days it’s just a. Constant bother.

Thanks for the replies.

VanillaLover how long did it take once starting HRT to notice an improvement with the dizziness? You are so right about the more you focus on it the worse it is, I do find when im outside and doing things im generally a lot better. Not sure if I need a higher dose with mine, I can't say I've seen much change so far but its only been a few weeks.

Yes I suffer with dizziness and nausea frequently and after ruling everything else out over the years came to the conclusion that it’s def hormonal. Always was worse when estrogen levels higher. I’ve been on low dose HRT for years and anytime I’ve tried to increase the dosage as I think it would be beneficial for me in many ways bone health etc I’ve had to revert back to low dose as I always get dizziness as soon as I make any kind of hormonal change. Do try not to panic and worry when you get a bout of dizziness as a panicky Adrenalin surge will make you feel worse. Try to relax and concentrate on breathing slowly until the feeling subsides. Also try to make sure you’re eating small amounts regularly as fluctuations in blood sugar can make this feel worse.

It could be worth getting your iron levels checked - I had really low ferritin levels (9) they should be over 50 and I was constantly dizzy with a feeling like I was in a boat. Iron infusion and now supplements and gave not been dizzy since

Mine started in 2018 and it was awful.  It was almost every day and at one point I thought there was something seriously wrong with me.  I thought I had a neurological disease.  I had a lot of tests done and everything was fine. I would never have thought that dizzinness was caused by hormones.

I've had dizziness for about 6 weeks and all the symptoms of labyrinthitis, but I've also got postural hypotension (dizziness on standing, or a few mins after standing).

It's been bad enough that I've gone back to my car before managing to do any shopping, and just driven home.

I'm fine at home as long as I'm sat or laid down.  I'm not used to anything like this, I like going for walks but at the moment I really don't feel fit enough.  It does come and go, but when it's happening it's not good.  I'm going to talk to the doctor next week, but I'd hoped it was just an infection or dehydration, but I'm drinking like a fish, I've put a lot of salt on my food (not good but was advised once by a cardiologist for heart flutters or this sort of thing) and I'm still getting it.

Hopefully it's a low oestrogen problem and I can resolve it.  It always seems to happen worse the week before my period (reacting to progesterone?  or is oestrogen lower then?)

Hope we all feel better very soon!  :)

Hi everyone, I feel for each and everyone of you as I also struggle with dizziness. Mine started 32 years ago & was told by a Neurologist it was connected to anxiety ( I do have a history of this) I have coped with it best I could on & off for years & it also wavers in severity. Mine is more of a swaying woozy rocking, lightheadedness feeling & it affects my balance when I walk, more than a spinning of the room or environment. I feel better when laying or sitting down.  I am now 57 & going through the menopause which can cause anxiety & with my own anxiety issues my dizziness is through the roof. I have been off work now for 10 months as I feel I’m on a constant rocking boat 24/7 inside my headI’m exhausted with it I feel constantly nauseous, poor concentration, headaches, off balance, afraid to go far, shops etc. I’m seeing an ENT next month, I’ve had different medication for dizziness ( which hasn’t worked) a CT scan & lots of blood tests everything was fine it homonal & anxiety. I can’t have HRT. when will it all end, x

Hi all.

I started having debilitating vertigo attacks, with nystagmus, 2 years ago, with dizziness/wonkiness most days.
My anxiety went thru the roof (always been an anxious person, that over thinks things).
As I have Meniere's Disease, with hearing loss, GPs just wanted to put it all under that umbrella, but I was having none of it.... it wasn't the same and I knew it; stuck to my guns and pushed to see a Neurologist.  Took me 7 months to actually see the Neurologist, but she did say it wasn't the Meniere's and I was diagnosed with Vestibular Migraines.
Trialled a couple of different things but nothing seemed to help, except Diazepam, to ease symptoms after a vertigo attack. So I lived with it, taking Stemetil and Diazepam as needed (rationed the diazepam 2mg to emergency use only).

Then the hot flushes kicked in and I started doing research online, mainly here & Louise Newman..... realised I had been perimenopausal for years and was now full on menopausal.
Because I'd been on the pill since age 15 and changed over to the mini pill age 40, I hadn't had a period for years (or not a proper one anyway) and didn't really think about it.

What got me to the GP again was actually my gums.  I've had sore gums at what would've likely been "that time of the month" for several years, but now I had them full time and the gums started to recede rapidly in the sore areas, leaving me with very painful sensitive teeth and a deep groove on one particular tooth where the gum's receded a lot.  As it was covid times I struggled to get in to see my dentist, but when I finally did, she agreed that it was very likely due to menopause.

Messaged my GP who was great, put me on Evorel Combi patch straight away.
Within 2-3 weeks my gums had stopped hurting and my hot flushes (cold sweats and nights sweats) all but vanished.
But then the anxiety hit and went thru the roof.
By about the 6 week mark Vertigo attacks were happening more frequently again, I started getting ear pressure with more hearing loss (bear in mind I'm already pretty deaf, so it was quite scary) and I was feeling sick/nauseous most of the time.
Ripped the patch off one day at the height of an anxiety attack and called the GP.  Broke down over the phone with the poor receptionist and got an almost immediate call back from the GP (think I may have panicked the receptionist, oops  ;D).  She got me in to see her within the hour.  I ended up having a vertigo attack in the waiting room, so she had to help me into the room etc (so embarrassing, but at least she saw me at me worst); she also saw that my ear drums were being pulled in, hence the ear pressure feeling.  She said I needed to stay off the HRT for a bit and we'd get the anxiety under control; I was put on Propranolol, which may also help with the vertigo.

So the Propranolol worked wonders with the anxiety, but not so much with the vertigo/dizziness and the menopause symptoms came back with a vengeance.  I was feeling pretty sorry for myself as everything got worse for a while.... guess that'd be my hormones being all over the place at that point.

Asked to go back on HRT at the end of Feb, after doing more research on here (I'm still on the Propranolol).  This time asked to go on Utrogestan, as the stomach issues made me think I may be Progestogen intolerant.  Was put on Utrogestan and Sandrena 1mg; started them 28th Feb.

As before, within 3 weeks the worst menopause symptoms had started to tail off, but then another couple of weeks and the stomach issues started again, along with my anxiety rising sharply sometimes and my ear pressure being back again.

9th Apr, sent a message to the GP, asking to change the way I take the Utrogestan and possibly change to patch oestrogen (to try to avoid the oestrogen peaks and troughs).  Couldn't even get a telephone appt till 28th Apr.
Thought, sod it, I changed Utrogestan to "vaginally" and although I'm still getting a few stomach issues I'm way better.

The great thing though (touching wood), is that my vertigo hasn't reared it's head in several weeks now and the wonkiness although hasn't gone, is much better.   :clapping:
This kinda proves to me that my "vestibular migraines", with it's Vertigo and Dizziness, is hormone related for me.  Pity the Neurologist didn't ask me any questions about hormones etc last Nov.

Will be asking the GP on Thursday if there's anything that could help with the ear pressure (other than the emergency diazepam I'm currently doing).... and if she can't help, I'd like to talk with a specialist.

Sorry for the "war and peace", but hope it helps someone else in their Dizziness journey.
