Practical advice - night sweats
« on: March 22, 2022, 09:03:03 AM »

Hello ladies,

Hoping for a few ideas here about how to help myself.

I’ve been having daytime hot flushes for a couple of years …not too bad just an annoyance more than anything. Night sweats been vaguely waking up drenched but nothing too awful.

However the last month or two the night sweats are really ramping up. They even start the evening before when I feel chilled and weird and know I’ll have a bad night. I wake up in the morning very early, covered in sweat but so chilled and shivery. Once I get out of bed I’m not too bad but it’s definitely affecting my sleep obviously. Last week I was so bad I actually thought I had a temperature and took it and did a covid test! Felt rubbish all day afterwards and had to take train to work as felt too rubbish to drive etc.

I’m wondering what to do about bedding etc. I am going to swap to summer duvet today but the thing is I usually feel cold rather than hot so I like lots of bedding! But I guess that’s not helping. I’m obviously getting very hot at some point as I sweat loads but by the time I wake up I’m freezing. Last thing I want is a fan or the air con on.

At the moment I have the window open but lots of bedding! Should I just try to go for much cooler and tough the chills out? Will anything help?

Love to hear other peoples experiences.

Just to add I’m already on HRT, awaiting clinic appt to increase dose. Also starting Venlafaxine which might help possibly?

Thank you all x

I remember those nights, just awful for you.
I did read that bamboo duvets or natural wool filled duvets can help to regulate temperature. They’re always marketed as warm in the winter and cool in the summer so maybe will help when you have “all seasons” in one night!
I used to keep bath towels next to my bed to lie on when my sheets were damp through night sweats as the dampness left me cold. It was easier than changing the bedclothes in the night several times!
Good luck with increasing your dose, I’m sure it’ll help.

Thanks for that. That’s a good idea actually ….maybe I could try a towel to lie on see if that keeps me warmer. I might try lying naked on towel (sorry!) as my nightie etc getting damp may be part of the problem perhaps ….

Hi Vanillalover
We have a memory foam mattress which we need to change but haven’t got round to 🙄 and they are notorious for holding heat.
I use a thin pure wool duvet with cotton sheets and duvet cover but recently have gone down to just a sheet and a fleece blanket. I then wear a long sleeved pj top and go commando on the bottom (sorry for TMI but VA is dictating this at the mo! 🤣). I sleep with my arms outside of the sheets. I’ve found that I’m still waking up pretty much exactly the same time every morning about 4.30am but I’m finding the sweating is much less in that it’s less in severity and more on my lower half.
It’s still not an uninterrupted nights sleep like I used to enjoy on my hrt prior to hysterectomy but it’s the best I can get right now and better than what it has been like. ie waking drenched several times. I have upped my oestrogen as well so I’m sure that has helped.
Hope this is useful sorry it’s a bit long winded 😬

Thank you Louise.

I think I’m going to have to ditch some bedding here!
