Vit D - Covid related sort of
« on: March 16, 2022, 08:21:09 AM »

Morning

Well, like a bazillion other people recently, I finally succumbed to Covid.  Tested positive at 6am last Thursday.  I'm not surprised.  I'm a teacher.  To be honest, it was just a matter of time.  Triple jabbed, however, severe asthmatic with high blood pressure, panic disorder and health anxiety aren't helping.  I don't feel fine.  I'm absolutely exhausted, like I need a lie down after walking up the stairs.  Staying hydrated, taking my meds, monitoring my SATs (they were 99% this morning).  Obviously, I'm entering day 7, as I tested positive on showing symptoms (sore throat) early last Thursday, and I was hoping to feel as if I was on the road to recovery by now, however, that's not the case.  I'm just sooooooooooooooooo goddamn tired, and scared of being tired, and bored.  Anyone got anything reassuring to say?  I have a ton of stuff to do, and it's so hard not to try and push on and do it, but I'm worried that if I go down this route then I'm just going to end up worse rather than better.

Also, as you may be aware, some advice says to load up on vit D (with vit K) and I'm using my SAD lamp and waiting for capsules from a reputable supplier.  I was a bit surprised though, when I looked up what vit D does, especially in terms of its effects on cortisol (stress hormone).  Is anyone taking vit D for this particular effect?

I am sorry to hear you have covid. Please try not to think of all the things you need to do. Without your health you cannot do those things anyway. You need to rest as much as possible. I would try to sleep, watch any gentle programmes you like and if possible read light hearted books. It will pass and then you will be back to your normal self.  :)

What sort of effects, ElkW? Teachers and being driven often go hand-in-hand. Try to let go if you can and just surrender to what your body is asking of you just now? It will get easier, possibly sooner, that way? 🤔

You have a Virus.  Believe me if it was seasonal 'flu you would feel worse!  Viruses have the ability to floor most of us, anyone who walks around with 'flu doesn't have it!

Your symptoms sound typical of Omicron.  Listen to your body.  Rest.  Keep hydrated.  Watch rubbish TV - I can list everything on BBC1/2 if you are able to stay awake long enough  ;).  If you push on the days that you feel 'better' you will relapse.  Sleep heals.  Make the most of being able to do nowt, until you feel ready to face a roomful of rowdy kids!?!?

As for VitD there is a train of thought that in the UK we should all take it regularly throughout the Winter.

I'm sorry you have been 'got' but it sounds as if you have done well, being a teacher, to escape it this far.

Having had quite a few friends and family who have had it I would say just listen to your body and don't push things. Some friends have recovered within a week and others were off work for three to four weeks. Take your time and allow yourself to be ill if that makes sense.

I can't help with the actual Vit D (K) question. I just take Vit D daily as per GP advice. You can overdose on it though (I think) so you need to bear that in mind.

Hope you soon recover.

Sorry you’re struggling. I echo what others have said…. Rest as much as your body tells you…. It’s fighting a virus.

What does vitamin D do to cortisol?

Elk, an 80 old friend had Covid, triple jabbed and was really poorly for 11 days. Within a week after that she felt back to normal. She said that the fatigue was overwhelming and had to sleep a lot of the time. I hope reassures you.

Thank you for your replies. It's such a slog. I can't even really describe the fatigue. Climbing the stairs feels like running a marathon. That said, I woke up this morning feeling a bit more human. Resting is also difficult when it feels like just saving problems up for the future ...

Re: the vit D, there are some reports that it can reduce cortisol, which is the stress hormone thing that reaches high levels after prolonged periods of adrenalin release. So for someone like me, who has anxiety disorders, we end up with high levels of almost static cortisol ...

Cortisol has a variety of effects, including increased blood pressure (which I have) and weight gain. I know people say it all the time, i.e. can't lose weight, but I really can't. I even seen an NHS nutritionist and they basically said that it's too do with the menopause and losing a certain amount of muscle mass so having less muscle to burn the calories, so I need to build muscle mass. I wear a Fitbit and do 15 - 20 thousand steps a day. I did the couch to 5k challenge. I work a massive allotment (and full-time). Point being, I'm relatively active, but only have to look at a biscuit to pile on the  lbs.

Anyway, high levels of cortisol can also block weight loss, and if lack of vit D can lead to high levels of cortisol, I was wondering whether vit D can help with weight loss. I realise I'm basically saying that sun bathing could be part of a calorie controlled diet, lol.

Hello ElkWarning l.

Sorry to read that you are unwell with the dreaded COVID. The Zoe App tells us that rates are currently high.

Vitamin D helps to regulate the immune system so it is well worth taking and Vit D capsules that also contain  K2  are absorbed better. Dr John Campbell is an advocate of Vit D supplementation and his YouTube videos are very informative on the subject.

I hope you recover soon and I agree that getting plenty of rest is important.

Take care and sending hugs.

K.

Why would resting 'saving problems up for the future' - does sleep during the night cause problems  :-\

Listen to your body.  If you rush your body will react.

I've been taking shedloads of VitD for years and, sadly, it's done nothing for my crazy cortisol. Exception to every rule! Hope you feel better soon.

Yeah Zoe is saying that infections are at an all time high.

I still feel pants. I washed some tea towels yesterday and I still can't summon the energy to get them out of the machine. It's just weird.

@ CLKD, I usually work about 70 hours pw. Doing nothing means it feels as if I'll have to catch up when I start doing something. I'll probably go back to work on Monday, that's 17 lessons to teach in a week. They need planning ... I'm trying not to think about it.
