Tranexamic Acid
« on: February 28, 2022, 10:56:12 PM »

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and looking for some advice and guidance. I am menopausal having my last period about 10yrs ago.. however, I couldn't cope with the side effects of menopause anymore and commenced HRT 7 months ago. I have a history of abnormal smears and have undergone 2 x colposcopies in the distant past, but having taken advise from a gynaecologist my GP prescribed Evorel Conti patches. I definitely feel better since using the patches but I have been having breakthrough bleeding each month. As this has been happening for 7 months I contacted my practice today and the GP I spoke to have prescribed me Tranexamic acid (he suggested I have Marina coil but this is not something i wish to use). I'm worried that the use of the Tranexamic Acid will increase the risk of having a blood clot (DVT) while taking the HRT, although I have no history of having blood clots. Additionally, it feels like this action is treating my symptoms rather than addressing the root cause of the problem. i may just be being a bit neurotic so just wondered if this is standard practice to prescribe Tranexamic acid? Thank you for any advice. x

How heavy is the bleeding?   This drug isn't usually prescribed unless a woman has bled heavily for days.

Many find that a Mirena eases a lot of symptoms.  What don't you like about the idea?

thanks for your reply.

The bleeding is heavy enough to have to use a regular pad and last month lasted around 6 days. I've had the Mirena coil in the past and had terrible stomach cramps so it's not the idea of having it as such, but more that I didn't tolerate it that well previously.

Shame about the side effects of the Mirena.  I don't think that your GP would have prescribed something that might increase a risk.

MayB put 'tranexamic acid' into the search box to see what pops up, make notes.

My periods would be heavy: painful beyond breathing; huge clots, changing pads every couple of hours and at night I had to lay on a bath towel  :-\.  10 days bleed, 10 days off.  I don't know if there was medication then but I got on with it  :'(

In case this is helpful to anyone in the future..

The prescribing of Tranexamic Acid to control HRT breakthrough bleeding when using combined continuous patches is not recommended as it would be required in my case to be prescribed monthly and indefinitely given it has been occurring for 7 months. Bleeding post menopause (my last period was 10yrs ago) should be investigated or at least dealt with by someone who has more expertise in women's health. Having discussed this with a different GP in my practice, I have now been advised not to take this medication.

(Dr's are not infallible, they do their best but they DO make mistakes and they are not experts in every area (as i unfortunately know to the long term detriment of my health, which makes me extra cautious about what I am being given). If you do not feel comfortable with any advice given, then please obtain a second opinion to put your mind at rest)
