Care Homes - no 'care' apparent
« on: October 03, 2025, 08:58:02 AM »

A care home that was placed in special measure has been closed down, its parent company confirmed.

Alderwood Cransley, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, was rated Inadequate and placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) last year.

A recent CQC report, external published on 25 September found continued breaches in areas including safe care, safeguarding, person-centred support, staffing and governance.

Alderwood LLA Ltd told the BBC the home shut in February 2025.

Right - I need to update this.  It appears that many 'care' homes across England close because they aren't 'up to standard'.  Quality Care Commission visit every 3/5 years offering advice. They do not return unless asked to do so.  Which means that apparently, in many cases conditions for residents and staff fail to improve.

Shouldn't this now be up to LAs to do 6 monthly checks?  Where Mum stays there was a change of 'manager' 11 times between lockdown proper and 3 years ago  :o.  Even those that seemed on top of the situation left after 12 months ........ the last two have been really good, 1 went after 12 months: we had seen her 3 days face2face and she never said a word!!!! so no chance for us to thank her for her care: the current 1 is in post. Both were/have been good at responding to any of my e-mail queries.

The company owner has 4 different homes - two in 1 area, 1 in Manchester another in Congleton.  So monies seem 2 B spread across to bolster when necessary rather than being ring fenced for each property .  Also Mum is self funded, but we don't know how much goes on her care - which seems 2 B good [enough] though she didn't want to C us [3 years ago].

If a place is found 2 B 'inadquate' surely GPs, LA, Safe Guarding, therapists should step in to make sure residents are at least clean, safe and warm enough?

I saw an article recently about how little care home workers are paid. Obviously there's the facilities costs that have to be paid, and the fact that some people are subsidised by others, but it seems like care staff, nurses, etc are expected to work for a pittance compared to other professions for a much more difficult and stressful job.
When people can earn more at McDonalds than at a care home you have to question why they would even consider care work!
Care homes shouldn't be run for profit, and should only be required to provide a set number of "free" places / number of residents, and hopefully those factors would result in more available money to pay the carers a higher salary, and also a higher carer / patient ratio.

tnx - I agree.  There should be both NHS as well as private places so that residents aren't subsidising others.

Care in the Community, muted in the mid 1980s, was never gong to work  :'(
