Anyone Familiar with Cyclogest?
« on: December 24, 2021, 06:29:48 PM »

Hello ladies.

Is anyone familiar with  progesterone pessaries called Cyclogest? Apparently they are prescribed for fertility treatment but can be used to treat the menopause as well. I am wondering if they are a good alternative to using Utrogestan capsules vaginally?

Your comments are most welcome as always.

Take care.

Hello AKatieD

Thanks for responding. Is Crinone a progesterone pessary like Cyclogest?

I would be interested to know how you get on with it.

Wishing you well.

I don't think it has a licence for hrt in the UK? I don't think there's a medical reason you can't use it. Try a search, I think someone has used it for hrt.

Crinone is a vaginal progesterone gel (so as I understand it not solid like a pessary). It is used for fertility treatment but there are studies to show it is effective as HRT (altho not licensed for this).

So far no side effects like Utrogestan, but some bleeding (presumably as lower dose). Hoping the bleeding stops after another month or two!

Hello AKatieD

Many thanks for your reply.

I am sure other ladies will be interested in your experiences as many are looking for an alternative to Utrogestan.

I hope the bleeding stops soon and please keep us updated.

Take care.

Hi Kathleen

Hope this isn't too late - haven't been on the forum for a few weeks....

Yes I used Cyclogest for several years - before Utrogestan was available for menopause or maybe before it was produced at all. My enlightened GP used to prescribe it off-licence to women who wanted "natural" ie bioidentical progesterone.

As it was a different formulation the dose was different from utrogestan - and I was prescribed double the amount for cyclical use ie 2 x 200 mg pessaries for 12 days per 28 day cycle from when I started until I was about 57 or 58 and then switched to Utrogestan.

In terms of using as an alternative - it depends what you want eg Cyclogest can be used as a suppository as well as vaginally but I did not like the effect of that the next morning (!) - without going into details!!! Anyone who used the discontinued Orthogynest vaginal pessaries - Cyclogest is similar - a hard waxy thing you insert which melts on contact with warmth of your body - so a bit messy - but then so is utrogestan.

Just as with utrogestan much of the progesterone gets to the uterus where it is needed, so more effective than oral  progesterone, but as with Utrogestan, is also absorbed systemically so there is no escaping the negative side effects though these are supposedly less than with oral intake.

Crinone is not like Cyclogest - and I am not sure how Crinone is inserted but being a gel is a completely different formulation.

Hope this helps :)

Just got mine but I haven't started them yet. I can't have utrogestan because it's always in gelatine caps 😒 so not veggie friendly.
It doesn't bother me at all that it's not standard for HRT, a lot of things aren't licensed for use in certain situations, they're still safe and they work. 🙂

It wouldn't hurt the utrogestan manufacturers to use a veg capsule though..

Ok, 3 month Crinone update as requested...

Just had review with specialist and thought she was going to pull the plug on Crinone as i am still having the occasional breakthrough bleed. Consultant not definite this is a bad thing as does show it is doing something and bleeding may still ease as still early days.

She said it and cycligest used to be more common before utrogestan among women wanting body identical hormones.

As it is only leaving me a little bit tired in the morning (after a good nights sleep) and no nausea/ anxiety, it is so much easier for me to bear than Utrogestan.  She is happy for me to continue and I can manage a proper days work easily again now..

Occasional scans needed to check endometrium but that is fine.

Also suggested take at night rather than morning. It is a gel that you squeeze out of an applicator (in similar way to tampon applicator), it can descend due to gravity as she politely put it, so if you use at night less likely to have this.
