Low bone density
« on: December 02, 2021, 03:08:48 PM »

Hi ladies. I've just had a hospital letter through to say my hip bone density is low. Does that mean osteopenia, the stage before osteoporosis?
The only recommendation was to carry on with my hrt.
Do any of you have experience of this? And if so it is something I should be actively doing something about?
I take vitamin d (75ug) daily and a multivitamin. I'm 39 and only on hrt 3 years but had symptoms for about a decade now

I was told I had osteoporosis after I'd fractured a fibia. A Dexa scan found  osteoporosis in the neck of the femur,  osteopoenia in the bulk of the hip and the spine.

5 or 6 years on and after courses of bisphosnonates and a 5 year course denosumab, the neck of the femur has improved to osteopenia. I still need to take the denosumab for 3 years to see if things improve. Spine is now normal

You need dedicated treatment Jennijx - did the Dept not advise on a follow up with the appropriate consultant?

May I ask why you had I assume an X-ray?

Strongkat I'm pleased to hear you have had some improvement. And hopefully will continue to have success. Are you exercising and taking additional vitamins too?

CLKD I had a bone density scan which was requested by my NHS Meno consultant in March. Only got the results today after going through PALS. So not entirely surprised there hasn't been any further support. The service has not been good.
I had a private consultation in October which has given me some real hope and have forwarded the letter onto this doctor who I'm sure will advise on what steps to take.
In the meantime I'm going to start taking calcium supplements and focus on strengthening exercise. Does that sound right?

At this point yes.  I would also write to my local MP about the delay in getting results!  Not Good Enough!

Brisk walking, 10-20 mins 3 times a week is a starting point.  Not jogging at this stage.  The idea is to impact the bone density so that it repairs itself continually. Which is why I opted for tooth implants as the jaw bone needs to be kept active by chewing, talking etc..

Thanks Jennijx.
I am taking Adcal (vitamin D & calcium).
I am exercising but not really enough weight bearing stuff. Things are a bit fraught here Mr SK has cancer which means much medical checking and stress - all a bit busy really.

OH! nasty.  So lots of appts., treatment etc., are U allowed to attend with him?

Skipping anyone  ::).  I tried.  Years ago.  Not a pretty sight.

Give yourself a break with walking up and down the corridor if necessary whilst waiting for DH?

I am allowed to attend some appointments with him. Basically I just front up and ask if I can go in too.
The only time I couln'dt go in was when he was getting a biopsy done on a lesion on his cheek. That was 4 or 5 weeks ago - they said the results would arrive in 2 weeks...............

Did U ring the Dept. to find out or has your GP received notification?  Waiting is the worst for me, once faced with 'it' I can Get On!

When I walked up and down to the compost this morning, this thread sprang to mind.  I wasn't springing, I'll leave that until the Spring  ;).  I do have a waking meter which I need to fit to my jeans to see how far I do walk.

So sorry to hear about your husband Strongkat. Maybe contact PALS to see if they can get you the results quicker? Hopefully no news is good news....

I've requested to get more information about my results. What does 'low' bone density actually mean? I would like some scientific numbers to base my worries on and be able to monitor changes over time.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm particularly liking the skipping idea. Maybe I could build up to being able to skip to a song?  ;D

Both - rang GP first then was told to ring hospital. Hospital was a bit of a run around but eventually got the secretary of the department who said "still in progress"

Re the numbers - you need the T scores. T -2.6 and less is osteoporosis.
