Over 20 years
« on: November 22, 2021, 02:00:39 PM »

Hi, it’s been a long time since I have been on mm and I am still going through this damn menopause. Although night sweats are a thing of the past, the flushes are still a common occurance. Now I am experiencing really thinning hair and I have never felt so low, I don’t really want to meet anyone to make small talk with, unsociable, and just look forward to going to bed at night, and although I have a lovely husband and family who apart from my hubby, even know how I feel. I am neither suicidal or self harming and look fine on the outside but I just feel so miserable every morning. Could this be something other than menopause, does anyone else have these feelings? By the way, menopause hit me at 45 and ( apart from 5 ‘normal’ years on HRT ) I’m now 66, I just wish I could get back on HRT to hopefully make me feel...well me again. Any advice welcome!

Hi!  who suggested that you stop using HRT?  Was it working?  There is no need to stop.  Ever.

Feeling low can be a symptom of low oestrogen.  So mayB discuss with your GP/Nurse Practitioner about re-starting.  Keeping a mood/food/symptom diary will be useful to counter any 'you are too old' or 'you can't restart' comments from your Doctor.

How is your diet?  Low blood sugar or a sudden rush of cortisol: the waking hormone: can cause low feelings.  How long B4 you begin to feel anywhere near 'normal' in the day?  I am at my worst first thing  ::).  So I have a routine that doesn't require much thought.

Thinning hair - I am not actually losing mine but it isn't growing back as quickly.  It looks flat unless I wash it daily and doesn't bulk up as it did, even 3 months ago.  No rhyme nor reason!

When did U last have  blood tests for VitD and iron levels, as well as thyroid function tests?

Hello,

I wish I could help you.

This low mood things happens to me regularly and I really hope that it will pass.  I'm almost 2 years postmeno but I'm not on HRT.  I knowc a few postemo women who are older than me and they seem absolutely fine.  I really don't know if HRT can help with meno-related emotional issues but you should try and get it from your GP..

20 years seems a bit long for you to still have symptoms though.  I always thought that meno was a phase like puberty but it doesn't seem to be the case for some women.  I will never be able to understand why it affects some women more than others.

What was it like during your reproductive years?

Peri-menopause is the years leading to the final period = menopause.  Some symptoms continue to niggle, others i.e. atrophy, may begin.  There's no rhyme nor reason.  Even now, 30 years after my last period, I get the odd 'Oh no, not a period after all this time!' feeling with slight pains, constipation, irritability.

As Dotty says the guidelines used to suggest you stop at 60 but there is no longer an age limit. I would see your GP.

Thank you everyone for your replies, I agree I probably should visit my gp and maybe get blood tests done to eliminate other causes for this low mood, hair loss etc. I have been reluctant to do this as there are so many people with bigger problems than mine at this time, but I don’t think there is ever going to be a ‘good’ time so I am going to have to bite the bullet and speak to him or nothing will change.
Thank you for all your advice.
