Recommendations for menopause doctors?
« on: November 21, 2021, 06:37:41 PM »

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for decent private gynaecologists/menopause specialists? It's not actually for me but for my older sister who is having an absolutely terrible time of it at the moment. She has put off getting help but now really needs it. I have two great doctors I have used in the past but both have told me they have waiting lists of a month which is too long - she needs to see someone before that.

(As usual her GP is being totally rubbish and will only test her FSH and nothing else, and has basically sent her packing.)

Thanks in advance for any recommendations xx

Gyanecologists often don't know much about menopause.

Is there a GP in her surgery with an interest in women's health?  Or a Nurse Practitioner?  Who may know more and can support your sister.  I suggest that she keeps a mood/food/symptom diary.  That she looks at Dr Newson's website for suggestions.  Which symptom would she like to ease first?

She doesn't have to see a GP if she has vaginal atrophy.  A GP needs to do thyroid function, VitD and Iron level blood tests to get a base line.  Could she change her Surgery?

You could try the BMS website or the Specialists tab on here though last time I looked (some time ago) it wasn't up to date. I think Newson Health has a waiting list of 3 months atm so it may be difficult to get one within a month. If you post what area she is you may get better replies.

Are you in the UK?
If your sister needs HRT then she is entitled to it whether her GP is rubbish or not. If she is not getting the proper treatment from the NHS then she should write to her MP.

Thanks all for your replies. Most private consultations are done over the phone or Zoom these days so location wouldn't matter. Yes would have loved her to see Dr Newsom but the waiting list is crazy.

CLKD we have a tiny village practice so no nurse practioner or woman's health GP  :'(

She is suffering from extreme anxiety, insomnia and night sweats. From everything I've gone through myself over the last year I am sure she needs to go on HRT but she's not able to access it through the GP because her FSH was OK (which is the exact same problem I had).

If anyone has seen anyone privately that they would recommend do let me knowA xx

How old is your sister?
I never had a test for anything,  my symptoms where enough for my doctor to prescribe hrt and that was years ago.

Hi Gilla,
What a pain for your sister.
I’d:
A) put a strong complaint in to surgery with supporting prescribing info.
B) buy a months supply of gel / Lenzetto and utro for under £50.00 delivered from a legal registered online pharmacy. That should last until the complaint gets resolved.
I bought online so I had spare in case of shortages etc.
Good luck.

I agree Gracie, it is disgraceful, but not uncommon. I had exactly the same problem (at a different GP surgery). Among GPs there seems to be no education that you can be suffering with debilitating perimenopause symptoms while still having regular ish periods.

VV I would do that in a heartbeat (it's what I did for myself originally) but my sister is extremely nervous and anxious - its's taken me a lot to even persuade her to see someone about it - so there's no way she'd take anything unless a doctor prescribed it, she hates taking medicine in general and is one of those people who believes her GPs word is God! If anyone has any recommendations do feel free to share, otherwise I'll just have to hope she can make it through until the end of December (she's really not in a good place).

VV - hope you're doing ok xx

Hi Gilla
Search the BMS website for online only clinics, I have found they have appointments available within a week.

Is her Surgery a satellite practice, our main Doctors are 5 miles away and attend here twice a week.  There is always a Nurse and receptionist on duty here.

Could she speak to a local Pharmacist to see who supports HRT more readily?

I have found rescue remedy mouth spray useful, a couple of squirts; don't think whether it works; and never had to re-spray.

Hi Gilla999, I see Dr Alice Scott at Essex Private Doctors.  I found her via the BMS website and have been seeing her privately for 2 years.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her, she has literally changed my life!  A wonderful doctor and lovely person too! I hope your sister finds some help x

Thanks in advance for any recommendations xx
