Alcohol tolerance problems?
« on: October 31, 2021, 11:20:33 PM »

Hey all, wondering if anyone else experiences a reduced tolerance to booze?

Up to a year ago I could have 2 glasses of wine no problem, but if i had 3 or more I would wake up middle of the night with upset stomach and racing heart for an hour or so but it would pass.(unless it was like 4 glasses or more and then assorted hangover symptoms including nausea, shakes etc).

But starting a couple months ago, i have had a few nights before bed when my heart started racing and would race for easily 6+ hours and keep me awake, as well as mild stomach upset. I thought it was general hormonal menopause BS but last night I had 2 glasses of wine and had the racing heart/upset stomach/unable to sleep thing - its been 24 hours now and I still feel off and anxious now too! And when i think back, the last two times i had these symptoms I also had booze - just less than what would trigger it before. What is weird if that one time I only had 1 beer and a small glass of wine ( 4oz maybe max)..

So wtf? Has my booze tolerance dropped and why? Anyone else experienced this? I enjoy a little booze but does this mean I can’t drink any more?

Hi yes alcohol intolerance is another side effect of hormones! The gift that keeps on giving.

Yep.  and probably Yep.  Alcohol is a depressant.  It also affects ladies during periods-menopause.

Yes, I'm afraid so.  Flushing, racing heart, insomnia - all worse for alcohol.  I no longer drink, but do miss a glass of wine.

Yep, same here, sadly no longer drink.  I would only ever have a glass or two max but I do miss it.

Also started giving me migraines  :-\

I'm 49 and haven't had a drink for nearly 3 years....

I am the same and have had to stop drinking sadly - hot sweats, palpitations, insomnia.  The last time I drank (2 glasses of red wine) I got up to go to the toilet in the middle of the night and passed out!   I do miss it, but it’s just not worth it.

I think it's the spike in oestrogen alcohol is thought to cause.

Haven't read the following article in full today but it's one I had bookmarked.  There are some interesting points in it for anyone who has the time/inclination.

https://academic.oup.com/alcalc/article/35/5/417/206575

The bottom line is: "It is concluded that several lines of evidence point to an alcohol-induced rise in natural or synthetic oestrogen levels in women."
