Anyone know the risk of breast cancer of Provera vs Utrogestan?
« on: October 08, 2021, 10:08:41 AM »

Help! I’ve recently switched from Feomoston tablets to Estrogel daily with Provera from day 12 to day 26 of cycle. I’m feeling good on this combination however I can’t shake the worry that there is a higher cancer risk with Provera as it isn’t body identical unlike Utrogestan. I have tried to research this to quantify the difference in cancer risk but can’t really find the information. Does anyone know?
I’m in Scotland so I know I can’t get Utrogestan easily but would be good to know the risk of cancer with Provera and I can then decide if I want to have the discussion about switching with my GP.
Thanks!

Where did U glean that information from?  I would send a short e-mail asking Dr Currie for advice: there is a small fee.  Let us know?

I thought it was accepted knowledge that micronised progesterone is safer. I’ll email Dr Currie and fingers crossed get a bit more info soon. Thanks

You are right - Utrogestan is generally considered the safer option (sometimes described as breast-neutral), but some of us who can't tolerate it do opt for MPA.  I can't quantify the difference for you I'm afraid.  If using MPA worries you I would certainly discuss with your GP swapping to Utrogestan.

Hi,

Utro has the safest option in terms of risk  I believe - little or no risk increase with Breast cancer - there is more risk with alcohol and weight etc , and Dygesterone has a good record and is preferred .

It s the other progesterone's that are of a higher risk , but again less than alcohol and weight I believe.  There are always risks to everything we take , it is waying up the pro's .x

Where in Scotland?
NHS Lothian GPs wouldn’t prescribe Utrogestan, worth asking them though, we might finally get it if enough people ask?
Other areas of Scotland are hit and miss as SMC has said it’s not economically worth it. So much for free prescriptions!
I had to save and go private but not an option for everyone.
