Hi

Can anybody recommend a uk consultant - ideally southern England who will carry out proper tests on the vulva / vagina to rule out infections.

Have seen a gynaecologist who just has fobbed me off without testing or even really listening to me so really want to go to someone who will do some proper investigation into ongoing vulvar soreness despite lots of estrogen.

Do you belong to the (private) Vaginal Atrophy Facebook support group? It's the best place to get recommendations for a vulva dermatologist in your area, or possibly a GUM specialist if you suspect infection.

Yes I do but most recommendations seem to be either London or more northerly.

Why do U think that you have infection?  Is there a thick, green discharge which smells?  Other discharges, if odourless, is the vagina cleansing itself.  Also if we use VA treatment, there may be some residue leakage.

Soreness can be eased by appropriate VA treatment plus some do require moisturisers as well.  What have you tried?  A gynaecologist is no more likely to understand menopause than some GPs seem to!

This may be too northerly for you, but I recommend Dr Stephanie Arnold who is a dermatologist with a special interest in vulval issues and who practices in Oxford. She works in the NHS and also privately, which is the route I took to see her recently (I have an NHS appointment with her clinic at the end of January but was at the end of my tether, hence the private appointment in the meantime). She knows her stuff.

I’ve been suffering from severe dryness and itching for a year or more, but unbearably for the last six months. I’d tried everything, every cream including all those only available in Canada and the US. I’ve even recently had vagifem and ovestin despite previously having breast cancer and against the express wishes of my doctor. Nothing worked except…..five weeks ago I had biopsies taken from my labia, and the swelling that followed gave me relief for a week. My GP who also has a aesthetics clinic suggested I see a clinic specialising in Desiral Vivacy fillers, a French product that hydrates the vagina and is used generally on young women. I went yesterday and had my shrunken labia filled and I can honestly say, I had relief immediately. I have a rejuvenated vagina 😂😂! No itching at all last night. I did a search of this site for desiral and nothing came up. If it wasn’t for my doctor I wouldn’t know about it. My outlook was long term steroids, when really all I needed was the natural covering for my vagina, my labia. It’s not a cheap fix, but it should last two years. Im delighted!

debq - where do U live?  Vaginal atrophy is due to the drop of oestrogen levels as we age, either 'ovestin' or 'vagifem' and I believe there is a newer treatment on the NHS will replace and re-plump the vaginal tissues.  This will stop the need to P feelings and will ease any itchy skin around the vagina, perineum and anus.  Steroids should not be put near the vagina unless absolutely necessary as it can thin the tissues.

I’m in Hastings. I know it’s normally down to the lack of oestrogen but the replacements made no difference for me. I think the procedure I had done is the same as what you are suggesting but my doctor said there was nothing like it available down here. I had mine done in London.

Some don't find occasional use of VA treatment helpful and require nightly applications. Sometimes I need to insert 'ovestin' in the afternoon as well as my nightly dose.  There are various moisturisers which can be helpful.

Do let us know how you get on debq - i.e. how long you have relief for: days, weeks, months : cost etc..  Always useful to find out if other treatments are available.
