Oestradiol reading - very high
« on: September 07, 2021, 03:56:05 PM »

Hi everyone,

I just got my blood test results back and my oestrogen in really high; 2261

It was 230 a few weeks ago.

I have been feeling pretty awful so have rung the menopause clinic to get their advice on maybe reducing my oestrogen as I am on Estradot 100 plus 3 pumps of oestrogel.

I know levels can fluctuate wildly in peri.

I basically feel very low, waves of despair, like my brain isn’t working properly and kind of buzzy in my head. Some of that may be depression and I am seeing someone about that this week.

I know some other people have felt low with high oestrogen. It’s all such a muddle trying to work out what is what. Hopefully the meno clinic can advise or reassure me but just wanted to put it on the forum too xxx

Hi MM,
Did you already have a chance to speak with the clinic and what was their advice?

The level is very high but is it 'real', i.e. telling your usual level these days, or just a fluctuation caused by your own hormones in the background, I guess that's difficult to tell.

My personal experience is that I don't feel good when oestrogen is high, but this is of course very individual. Some people feel excellent with high levels. I'm getting jittery/anxious/nervous etc with high E, and had that already before starting HRT during time of ovulation.

Hope it will stabilise soon! Keep us posted! xxx

Thanks Ella, I hope to speak to the clinic tomorrow. I usually feel quite good with levels of about 600. So this is high for me but could be a result of recent increase in estrogen (3 extra pumps of Estrogel on top of Estradot) which perhaps I can slowly lower now.

Such a jigsaw puzzle to work out xx

It may be an obvious question but do you apply your estrogel on your arms? This happened to me as blood was taken a few hours after I had applied the gel and the reading come back over 2000 as well. X

True, its a puzzle and it's so difficult to find the sweet spot, with almost zero margin of error it feels -at least for some of us.

Good luck for discussion tomorrow and hopefully you'll get some useful advice. xxx

Thank you Ella,

Donna, that’s a really good point but I don’t apply to my arms.

Good to know others have had high readings too x

Please please go on symptoms not on blood levels in peri.  I’m sure because I’ve done the exercise to prove it.if you did say ten tests on different days they would all be different and they could be wildly different, because you are still feeling rubbish that tells you they are fluctuations, but that is my own experience.  Some doctors will look at one test and say it’s normal or too high but yet you are still suffering, if tests were not done with me and we went on symptoms I wouldn’t have been seriously ill for the last 2 1/2 years.  I don’t want others to suffer needlessly.

I know I have mentioned it on other post but I did a range of tests over a 2 week period, I was lucky that the last one came back low the highest one was over 5000pmol, I felt the same on all the tests.  I may have done 20 tests and not struck lucky with a low reading which proved I wasn’t absorbing.

Tests are probably more useful post menopause without the fluctuations.  My menopause doctor now realises that my Estrogen was never normal after proving it to her by having loads of tests and she now goes on symptoms.

Hello,

I have a similar problem though my readings are extremely high - 11,101 ppml.
This is the second test with such a high result and Thriva said it could be contamination on my finger used for the finger prick but I did both tests before applying my gel and also washed and sanitised my hand.
My question is - how long do the levels on the hand stay high? Are they always high on the hands unless you wear gloves to put it on?
After my first high test I reduced my gel from 3 pumps a day to just 1 but the level is exactly the same in my second test.
I started taking HRT for hot flushes as those have stayed at bay but mood swings have never really stopped and still having sleeping problems. I'm thinking of coming it off it now for a month and then testing again becuase if these readings are correct it is dangerously high. Any thoughts welcome!

Hi finger prick tests for oestrogen levels have been proven to be highly inaccurate. Dr Newson advises not to use them x

Ha

I've just posted a new thread then saw this

My levels are 30,331 pmol/L  on a medicheck finger prick test

I guess it's mega wrong on 2 pumps per day!

Hi Toni and MM - as just mentioned on another thread I've done two finger prick blood tests and both came back with similar results and were contaminated by the HRT. The second one was after using plastic gloves for two weeks when applying and it's Lenzetto so you don't even touch the product like with a gel or cream... so the potential for contamination must be huge.

I now pay the extra £30 with medichecks to go to a hospital for a venous test. Hope this helps xx

Thanks so much for all the advice! I've booked in to have a venous test done at the Women's Health Clinic. Fingers crossed for a proper result.

I have just had my results from let's get checked. My oestradiol level is 55050 apparently.  I have just read here that Dr newson says that finger prickly test is not reliable.

Hi Alison

Did you get your test done with Medichecks by any chance?  I had the same issue a few months ago where I had gone from <30 to over 6000 and insisted on a new test being done.  I had to get a ventrous (is that right spelling) blood draw done instead of finger prick but when I researched on some other forums I saw that there have been a number of false readings using this method.  So all I would say is just make sure this reading is right and maybe follow up with an actual blood draw rather than finger prick method.

p.s my actual reading with the ventrous blood draw turned out to be around 300 so as you can see vastly different from 6000> finger prick test

Hi, sorry to jump in… I’m new here and new to HRT. I’ve been having some strange symptoms and was concerned that my oestrogen levels were too high. They seem low in comparison to results I’ve read here… I’m so confused. I had my blood test at my local hospital. I’ve put results below. Again, apologies for hijacking, I haven’t had a response from my own post regarding this so hope you don’t mind. I should probably add that I still have regular periods but at the time the test was taken I hadn’t had a period for 5 weeks (I put the lateness down to starting HRT).
