My friend has had fungal infections in both her thumb nails for months, it's been horrible, and it's very painful if she knocks them. The treatment she's using doesn't seem to be helping much. To my dismay I'm sure that I've just developed it in one of my big toe nails. I noticed a little white patch at the bottom of it a few days ago, and now it's gone dark. Last night it was hurting quite a lot, and kept me awake. I've got enough going on healthwise, including debilitating ME, and am struggling to cope. I'm not sleeping well most nights as it is. Has anyone had this, and found anything that helped? I've seen tea tree recommended. It's almost impossible to get through to my surgery, let alone get a phone consultation with a doctor.

Although I haven't had this, I should think a podiatrist could help. Not too expensive,  and easier to get hold of than a GP.

It can be difficult to shed once the nail bed becomes infected.  Best to see a specialist ASAP.  Sometimes the nail is removed so that the 'bed' can be cleaned and treated.  A Pharmacist may be able to advise too.

Has she has nail scrapings sent off? It takes up to a year for the fungal nail paint to work I'm afraid. You can have tablets but these are not kind to the liver.

Scholl fungal nail treatment 2 in 1 has worked for me.  I had a fungal toe nail during lockdown so couldn’t go for treatment anywhere.  I bought it online and didn’t have any expectations, but it worked!  The nail has taken a long time to regrow but it got rid of the fungal infection really well.

Maybe what works depends on how extensive and entrenched the infection is? 🤔

DH tried various methods to get rid of a fungal infection on his toe nails and did successfully try tablets. This was quite a few years ago, but no damage to his liver as far as we know.

JP- Podiatrist inspired. Thanks. I have terrible fungal big toe nails from boot pressure from my hillwalking/climbing days. Shall investigate!!!!!! Nothing, absolutely nothing else has worked! 👍

I saw a podiatrist about mine. She suggested another year of fungal paint stuff. That didn't work so she then suggested I just varnish them to hide the discolouration! That's what I do now.

Did the fungal infection go away Taz?

Wearing sweaty hiking boots for hours can start issues which can be difficult to sort.  I've never understood wearing 2 pairs of socks  - I had 1 pair up 2 my knee socks which 'did' OK.

Apple Cider vinegar or Teatree oil are two natural remedies. 

I can vouch for the vinegar as it worked a treat on my toe nail.

Vicks chest rub is great for nail infections. Google it, my husband used Vick’s and it took a while but definitely work and at a fraction of the price of antifungal nail medication.

It’s amazing what Vick’s chest rub can treat.

Neat Tea Tree oil applied daily with a cotton bud sorted mine within a couple of months. I also used a sanding block all over the nail every now and again to reduce the thickness and help the oil absorb through the layers.

This is the only thing that worked for me, I tried lots of different over the counter creams. I rubbed the Vick into my toe nail and put a sock on to go to bed, it took a few weeks but my nail started to grow out normal  it took over 6 months to grow out totally but it worked.
