Progesterone tablets and gel advice how to use
« on: August 11, 2021, 08:49:55 AM »

Hello All, I currently take femseven conti.  I started in April this year to help with symptoms.  I have found since taking them that I have a few days of feeling good but then I experience a crashing fatigue, mood is still up and down.  I dont feel rested when I wake up despite a full nights sleep but thats been like this for some years now.  The GP said that gyna asked if the patches stick well and if they dont then suggest moving to cyclic routine and progesterone tablets and gel would be worth a try.  My question is best ways to use the routine. she said when i finish the patch to start taking the tablet for 14 days, so presumably after that I have a break for 14 days, is that right? the gel, two pumps a day either arms or inner thigh, please may I ask your opinion on whats suggested and if Ive understood the routine.  will the progesterone help with sleep? thanks all for taking the time to read and respond. Hope all have a good day feeling well. ;)  ps I am post meno, no normal period for well over a year.

Hi if you are post meno then you take the Utrogestan every day. Is there a reason why your GP has recommended a sequential regime ? X

Hi Dotty,  gynaecologist said I may be more suited to sequential but no reason given. Message came via email to gp. So the GP told me to take progesterone tablets for 14 days and start when next patch finishes.is that sequential?  Thanks.

Hi bluebird

The patch you're currently on includes a synthetic progestin, which isn't ideal. The safest form of HRT is body identical transdermal oestrogen and micronised progesterone (also body identical) which can be taken orally or vaginally.

If you're progesterone intolerant (had bad PMS when you were menstruating) you might always find the progesterone part tricky mood-wise. Although some women find Utrogestan (micronised progesterone) better for mood than a synthetic progestin.

Speculating, but perhaps your gynae thinks sequential is better because you won't be experiencing the depressive effects of progesterone all month long.

I think you've understood the routine. Oestrogen gel all month long and progesterone for 12-14 days. If you're severely progesterone intolerant and your mood is very low you might want to look at alternative regimes where less progesterone is used. Professor John Studd's regime where it's only taken for 7 days a month. There's also the option of having a longer six week cycle - so you have more good days. Doubt a gynaecologist would be okay with this. You'd need to be referred to a Menopause Specialist.

You can also use Utrogestan with continuous HRT. Vaginally/every other day I believe if low mood is an issue.
