Too much Utrogestan?
« on: July 10, 2021, 05:19:55 PM »

Hello everyone

I started BHRT 7 days ago, 0.5mg estrogen gel with 100mcg utrigestan on continuous basis. I opted to use the utrogestan vaginally.

Through the week I have had progressive symptoms and I am wondering if this could be a sign that the vaginal dose is a little high, I understand it can be every other day vaginally.

Symptoms started off with headache, increased hunger, bloating, stomach ache and now water retention and bloating.

Would welcome anyone's thoughts or experience. I am considering reducing to every other day before possibly trying to increase again.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Hockcliffe

 :welcomemm:

0.5 mg gel is a very low dose so it could well be that you are experiencing more of the progesterone side effects from that dose of vaginal progesterone (100 mg daily) which can protect the endometrium from medium doses of oestrogen as well as low doses.

Maybe tell us a little more about yuorself - how old you are, and where you are in the menopause journey in terms of cycle length and interval (how frequent periods are), and the symptoms you are hoping to relieve and then we can help you better?

In principle yes alternate day vaginal utrogestan can be prescribed off licence for lower doses of oestrogen but it does depend on your individual circumstances.

Thanks for your reply.

I am 51 and have been peri for several years. Early this year my hot flashes and night sweats increased to every 45 mins. After a month or so they settled but at that point I started to suffer with vaginal dryness and painful sex. This led to urinary frequency and urethral irritation.  Went down the road if UTI treatment, yeast etc and eventually analysis which showed everything clear.

Started on vaginal treatments and had relief from symptoms but then they always came back. It was as if the creams helped to start with but then became the problem. Decided to speak to a specialist who started me on low dose estrogen and progesterone along with vagifem and a compounded cream of dhea, estriol and testosterone.

Started a week ago and first 6 days everything calm. Then the bloating and tummy ache started. Also as before the urinary irritation returned.

It is a rollercoaster ride and I would really like to get off!

Sorry for the long and waffling post.
