Heavy periods/abdominal pain
« on: July 10, 2021, 12:47:56 PM »

Has anyone noticed their periods are getting heavier and bothered with digestive issues during peri? Last few months I’ve noticed more stomach discomfort but this week has been awful  :'( Feel so nauseous and not enjoying my food at all and I love my food! Of course worrying about it doesn’t help either  ::) Be grateful for any advice  :)

I'm not sure where you are in menopause but in the peri years leading up to Meno periods can be heavier or lighter, more painful and clottier, further apart or closer together, shorter or longer. Stomach issues are also part of it but, of course, any troubling digestive symptoms should be investigated if they last a while and not just automatically be put down to menopause.

Hope you feel better soon. Nausea is so horrible.

Yep.

I suffered heavy, clotty, VERY painful periods for years in my 20s.  I dreaded each month.  Add to that nausea and belatedness  :-\

'feminax' - period pain relief 2 B taken 24 hours B4 a bleed is expected.  Worked for me.  I went on The Pill eventually for 11 years.

I felt sick within the week of a period arriving.  At one point I knew where every waste bin was in every shop that I was likely to go into; I remember standing out side shops checking to make sure that I didn't feel sick ........

MayB eat little and often rather than trying to face a full meal?  I use dried fruits/nuts; bananas; muesli; dried flakes, U know, the ones in small boxes of 'Kellogg' which I can eat dry.  Ginger biscuits too .......... if really necessary. sea sickness tablets which can cause drowsiness

 :foryou:   >:(. HORMONES  >:(

Taz2 to be honest I’m not sure where I am either. It was mentioned by my gp that I could be peri 2 years ago when I was slightly anaemic. 11 years ago I was bothered with h pylori which was treated with triple therapy but my stomach has always been a bit up and down since. In April I got in touch with my gp (different one) because I was feeling like this she ruled out peri even though I get flushes, night sweats etc but did bloods and stool sample which all came back ok. Still felt the same so I was prescribed omeprazole which has helped but the last few days have been awful, I have my period just now so wondering if it’s connected? Nausea is awful 😞
Thank you x

Mine have certainly been heavier and clotty too recently and this month 4 days earlier. This is the first time I’ve felt so awful before I would describe it as period flu but the nauseous feeling and gripping is just awful. Usually it would subside once the day goes on but not the last few days  :'( I have bran flakes and a banana in the morning, sandwich or roll for lunch and a healthy tea. The joys! Thanks for the advice 😊

If you are getting hot flushes and night sweats then I would say you are definitely in peri. Doctors are encouraged to base diagnosis of peri on symptoms rather than blood tests but not all are aware of this. Also peri is usually the 8 to 10 years before menopause so if you are in your forties then you are also probably in peri.

Are you still on the omeprazole? Could it be that you have picked up a virus of some sort?

It was a female gp too and said I wouldn’t be peri even though I explained I was getting hot flushes and night sweats. I know blood tests don’t give an accurate result for menopause but for some reason they didn’t even do a test for that! When a different gp prescribed omeprazole she was very sympathetic and said because I was worrying it could be causing stomach issues. I’m 47 and still on omeprazole. It’s frustrating with phone call appointments as I would rather see gp face to face x

Why won't GPs listen to women  >:(

Especially women GPs  >:( - how can a woman not be 'in peri' with those symptoms  :-\

I was given that drug to ease an associated cough with reflux.  Do U suffer with indigestion/reflux?  You'll know if you do!

Hormonal blood tests are reliably unreliable  ::)

I know I don’t get it either  :-\ especially when it’s symptoms they have to go by. My gp prescribed it due to the ‘burping’ I had in the morning, I can describe it as silent reflux.

Hi , Loiuse newson did not even recognise her own perimenopause,

https://d2931px9t312xa.cloudfront.net/menopausedoctor/files/information/211/MWF%20article%20Nov%202018.pdf.

I was given omprazole and it made me feel sick and gave me tummy issues.

Thanks for that pepperminty, sounds like me! That’s some of the side effects of omeprazole. Thought great because that was the whole point was to get rid of feeling nauseous and discomfort but last few months has helped me apart from this week  :'(

Hi DeeMarie,

it is a mare isn't it. I am not a doctor, but Omprazole which is a proton pump inhibitor and can have long term health issues that were hi lighted to me. I changed to Ranitidine . But speak to your Gp first.

Certainly Dr James le Fenu in The Monday Telegraph warns of long-term use of omeprazolol which can appartently, aggravate problems we are trying to ease  ::).  I have found 'Rennies' or Milk of Magnesia liquid helpful.

Pepperminty tell me about it! I’m not on it long term as far as I’m aware. I’ve to phone up every month to see if I’ve to continue with it or not but I’ll keep that in mind, thanks x
