Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
« on: July 05, 2021, 04:51:01 PM »

So here we go again. Third wave (covid), cases rising exponentially so we're going to relax all controls. Can't believe they're removing the requirement for masks on public transport. We all know the covidiots who crawl all other each in the pub will be the ones who don't feel the need to protect anyone else. We have to 'learn to live with it'. That'll go down well with those who are going to die from it. I wonder  if the person who photographed matt handcock's indiscretion will feel any guilt for the deaths he'll have caused (not particularly a fan but he wasn't as reckless as javid).

I was shopping when Boris gave his update ............. it seems that 'they' are trying to appease the public.  Trying to make them selves look 'good' ?  It's up to us to continue keeping our distance as well as wearing masks 😷 when necessary. I won't be giving up mine anytime soon.  Particularly in busy areas to protect myself not others.  Continue with the hand gel etc..

Of course it's OK not to wear a mask: if you are following football or F1 ........ or go to Latitude Festival; though Fairport have postponed their Reunion until 2022.  I don't want 2 B a guinea pig by attending events where people are 'back to normal'.   :-\

It's up to LA's to drawer up By-Laws which have to be posted in regular sites around a town, i.e. Southwold.  Same as By-Laws stating that alcohol cannot be drunk on the streets ....... I would have thought that LAs would have been ahead of the game with that!!

Although cases are rising has any1 died in recent weeks ?? - as if that really matters in the great scheme?  Medics are on their knees, QEII Hospital, King's Lynn is being held up by props in some Wards - can U imagine waking up to that!  it'll be buckets to catch the drips soon  :o

The problem with masks is that they protect other people from you but do very little to protect yourself from them. If someone chose to stand in front of you and cough all over you there is no protection. Might be time to invest in a proper medical mask, they weren't available last time I looked.

It's amazing how many people I've spoken to lately who think the mask protects them from covid whereas the  normal ones give no protection at all but do stop you spreading it to others.  Also how many think that being fully vaccinated means you won't catch it.  :-\

Too many Taz.  It appears that not enough info was given at the time of vaccines being given?

That's because you are a caring person Jaypo and don't want to infect those around you. I still wear mine when helping my elderly dementia-stricken neighbour even though she always says she hasn't been anywhere to catch it so I'm safe and I have to explain (again) that I'm protecting her from me.

I've seen some lovely mask 😷 designs but of course, having to keep distances, we can't discuss them   ::)

I’ll be still wearing mine too. Like you say, you do get used to it.

Re the mask debate, read this today and found it quite surprising.

https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/masking-lack-of-evidence-with-politics/

It's always important to have an evidence base to underpin political decisions that are made - even though it is ignored or downplayed half the time.

However, surprising as it may seem - because of the way this pandemic developed so quickly worldwide, even a paper with a date of July 2020 - whilst normally being up to date - is now out of date given the pace of scientific research globally since the outbreak started. In fact it's breathtaking what can be achieved with the right amount of resources!

So here is a more up to date analysis - although from February 2021 - giving the then opinion based on more recent Covid-19-specific evidence:

Effectiveness of Mask Wearing to Control Community Spread of SARS-CoV-2

Feb 10th 2021
Prior to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the efficacy of community mask wearing to reduce the spread of respiratory infections was controversial because there were no solid relevant data to support their use. During the pandemic, the scientific evidence has increased. Compelling data now demonstrate that community mask wearing is an effective nonpharmacologic intervention to reduce the spread of this infection, especially as source control to prevent spread from infected persons, but also as protection to reduce wearers’ exposure to infection.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2776536

Benefit to the economy notwithstanding,  I also think the pace of relaxation of restrictions given the third wave - is absolutely absurd. Yes we have a vaccine which is reducing by maybe a factor of (10? not sure) hospitalisations and deaths, but the increase in cases is exponential according to the graphs - though maybe this is slowing. Nevertheless this is even with the restrictions as they are.

Even though most of us won't end up in hospital (or die) provided we've been doubly vaccinated (and anyone who hasn't and is able to, is crazy - under these looming conditions) - because the vaccine does not prevent symptomatic disease in everyone, nor transmission - a lot of people are going to end up being ill this summer - not pleasant. Far worse though is that unlimited spread - which is what it will be - provides ideal conditions to incubate a new variant that escapes the vaccine and God help us if (or should I say when) that occurs - back to square one - or at least a setback until the vaccine can be tweaked and we get boosters....

Just looking on the bright side girls  ;D

They're doing it for the benefit of the economy but I think even that's dubious. Anyone who realises the potential danger won't be going on public transport or into crowded spaces and if many people keep away from city centres and shops it will backfire. I feel reasonably safe in shops atm but I won't when social distancing and mask wearing ends so I will avoid these places. I feel sorry for bus drivers, bar staff etc many of whom are too young to be double jabbed. I'm waiting for lockdown 4 - maybe then they will finally learn.

People in Cities have been travelling on public transport, there was a report in the papers at the weekend about how trains in London are standing room only ....... still!  I simply wouldn't get on anyway due to claustrophobia .........

As an aside - why do medics wear paper masks in theatre .......... to protect the patient, surely?  To prevent Germs getting into open wounds.
