Hi there,

So since I have to wait 44 weeks on the NHS for a hormone coil (mirena) to be inserted under sedation since without it was seriously so excrutiating I nearly passed out. I am no pushed to take the tablet utrogestan and I'm not great with pills, but I'm desperate now.

For those who take it, would I experience less sides effects orally or vaginally?

Hope someone can shed some light on this. I'm also confused how and when to take it. On the box it says '1 to be taken daily on days 1 to 25 of cycle'. I guess that means 1 dail for 25 days? What time in the day do I take it? and is it with  or without food?

Thanks

Hi if you are post menopausal you can take 100 mg every day. Take it at night on an empty stomach.

If you are peri menopausal then take 200mg for 12days ….days 15-26 of your cycle. x

Most people take it at night as it can have a sedative effect. Usually fewer side effects if used vaginally as it bypasses the digestive system. No need for an empty stomach vaginally. The 3 day break (as on the box) is to allow a bleed if there has been any build up.

Thanks, and can I start it any time? Or should I start at the beginning of the month - so August? Sorry for all the questions, totally clueless.

Are you having still having regular periods? I am and my aim is to match the Utrogestan to my natural cycle as much as possible, which means I take it on days 14-26 of my cycle, with a withdrawal bleed after that. If you're not having any periods or they're irregular then in theory it doesn't matter when you take it as long as it's consistent

Hi are you post menopause or still having periods (peri menopause ). That determines how you take the Utrogestan. If you are in peri then you take 200mg but only for half a month, do it works out the same over a month.

If you are post menopause, start taking the Utrogestan now and take 100mg every night . X

Yes I'm having regular periods. Ah, that makes sense to match it to natural cycle. And it's day 14 of my cycle today so I can't start today, cool!    8) and that would mean 1 tablet or 2 vaginally from today ?

Doesn't seem to go into details in the leaflet.

God this is so helpful so far thanks

Ah that makes sense NOW. I'm still having regular periods yes. Today is the 14th day of cycle and I'll take that until  26th day. I'm really gonna need to not forget this. Set this in my calender so get notifications.

I wonder how fast it would take two tabs to dissolve in your vag though? LOL

Hi to make it simple , start taking it on the same date every month. I think the advice on here is to take it days 15-26 of your cycle.

Yes that's what I do - take from day 14 to day 26 of my cycle (which is around 29 days long). Definitely best to try and match the Utro with your natural cycle if you're still having periods. The options would be 200mg orally or 100mg vaginally (or some people here even use 100mg rectally). Good luck xx

Rectally? That's a new one on me.

Another silly question. Do I slap on my Evorel patch on the same day of the month I start the utrogestan?

I hadn't heard of using utro rectally either - think I'll avoid that one  :o. The evorel patch should continue to be changed twice a week. As utro is taken for 12 days (days 15-26) it won't align with patch change day.
