Everel Conti still bleeding
« on: June 15, 2021, 06:40:46 AM »

I'm using the Conti (50)patches for Osteoporosis. Started Feb 2021 and had fortnightly bleeding. Since mid to late May it has been constant. It goes from red blood at the start then brown. Then repeats. I was checked at the hospital and the lining is thin and all was OK (no hysteroscopy as it apparently wasn't needed)

I know it can cause "intermittent" bleeding, but constant?

Does anyone know what does is prescribed for OP? I was wondering if the dose is too high for me and I need half a patch? GP said wait until end July

Hi Stockport. I had constant bleeding for the first 6 months on a conti HRT. I then swapped back to sequi which gave me a predictable withdrawal bleed and this solved the problem for me as it was more manageable. Bleeding is common for the first six months of any conti regime.

I'm not sure on the dose needed for osteoporosis. It's difficult to find out information as HRT isn't usually prescribed purely for osteoporosis nowadays?

I decided I didn't want to take the bisphosphonates for my OP, hence the HRT.

Do you bleed once a month on the sequi?

Yes. With me it was a four day bleed a few days after stopping the combi patches each month.

You would need a blood test to find out if you are absorbing enough oestrogen. Serum beta estradiol needs to be 250-350 pmol/l if you have osteoporosis or osteopaenia. People absorb differently from different products, so it's difficult to say what dose you need.

GP will not do blood test

HI Stockport1965 Ive been on evorel conti sonce Feb 2020 and have a lot of bleeding with episodes of flooding. Scans haven't revealed anything. It seems for some women do experience bleeding issues with evorel conti. Alsso depending on where you are with the menopause it could be breakthrough bleeding. I was told bleeding for up to 6 months is normal and advised after that time I could either reduce the dose (but I have had increased symtoms so that's not currently an option) or change to a different progesterone. Provera was suggested as being good for controlling bleeding but tends to have more side effects. Hopefully, it will settle for you. As Taz2 says going to a sequi regime is also an option but wont work for me as I need constant levels because of migraines.

Hi Stockport
We are taking similar journeys in this

I had early menopause at 43 now 51. spine at osteopeneia range (-2)   like you I decided to go on HRT  evorel conti patch to prevent osteoporosis

5 months down the line I'm bleeding more and more. I'm not overly alarmed as I know its the hrt and have read loads that it is in the 1st 6 months bleeding happens
but of course now it's going over that and doesn't look as if it's getting any better

Do I change to a different patch, different dose
Like you... too many questions

I've just had 4 days bleed/discharge free :). However today, I feel as though a period is coming shortly. I belong to a couple of groups on fb (HRT & Hormone Education Group) (Osteoporosis UK ~ Friendly Support & Natural Options) which have been great.

There are other choices re HRT. If my bleeding continues long term I may look to change to something else. I may be wrong but I think the risks increase with pill form. I was disappointed my loss of libido hasn't be sorted so may look at progesterone

This happened to me on conti HRT. I gave it the full six months - I had bleeding for the whole of that time - and then changed back to sequi to give me a predictable bleed each month rather than a full on continuous period. There are other members on here who have done this. I found that a change of progesterone didn't help - it was the continuous progesterone which was the problem for me.

That's interesting! How is your libido without the progesterone, or wasn't it a problem anyway?

I've never found that HRT made any difference to my libido so can't really answer that one. I no longer need progesterone as I had a hysterectomy seven years ago. Have you found the conti HRT  has helped with yours?

That is interesting re the sequi. I thought that if you were post menopause ( years in my case) that it was continuous progesterone that was needed.

The side effects of the hrt state 'spotting' never that it would give a proper bleed.
It's only through this forum that I've found this out and has put my mind at rest somewhat

I was thinking maybe trying a different patch/ progesterone to see if the bleeding stops.

It's all so complicated
Thanks for the group recommendations. I do belong to the osteoporosis one which 1st pointed me to hrt

A progestogen is needed as part of HRT for women who have not had a hysterectomy. This is because in women with an intact womb, oestrogen stimulates the growth of the womb lining (endometrium), which can lead to endometrial cancer if the growth is unopposed. A progestogen is given to oppose oestrogen's effect on the womb lining and reduce the risk of cancer, though it does not eliminate this risk entirely.
