Hi.
Has anyone any tips for what to clean the bath with after bathing in emollient? I mostly shower to avoid issues, but do like a bath when the M.E. is playing up a bit. I would like to use a non-aggravating cleaning fluid otherwise back to square one with reactions! 🙄

Bit of a tricky one that.  I used to use Aveeno bath stuff based on oats, and cleaning was an issue.  I just relief on usual bath cleaners but they can be harsh as you know.   I think there are less harsh things on the market now, especially in health food shops, though they can be pricey.  It's worth looking at.  Supermarkets stock more things like that now.

I use 'cif'/jif ........ depends on what the bath is made of.  Mine is an old cast iron, very comfy one 

How about white vinegar?  On a gentle cloth rubbed round; leave for 10 mins and rinse.

CLKD, the emollient is Hydromol bath and shower emollient. It contains "light liquid paraffin" 😱, PEG-7 glyceril cocoate, iso-octyl stearate, isopropyl myristate, ethoxylated alcohol (C12-C14). I've no idea what any of these are!

? anything actually necessary ?  most products begin with 'aqua'  then a load of Enumbers or products which usually mean nowt to me 

What's it supposed to do, what benefit would I get from using it?  I'm happy with the bubbles that I use - Badedas

I would have thought that not many women who are using treatment for VA can still use a strong bubble bath.

I so envy CLKD in that respect! Ah well, we can't have everything

If it's a greasy film it leaves what about washing up liquid? It's one of the gentlest degreasers you can find and easy to rinse off.

Badedas-envy here, too!!!!! Is washing up liquid scented or with chemicals? Maybe E-Cover. I'm astonished no-one else has been prescribed emollient. Hmmmm...... Thanks anyway, everyone!

It's got paraffin in it - beware of naked flames

Supposedly it 'traps' emollient against the skin to prevent drying out.  In my mind this is totally against what our skin is for, which is to allow our bodies to sweat and cleanse 

I would avoid.  We find 'Nivea' or 'vaseline' works well.  DH for his ear lobes and that flappy bit near the head as well as his legs and feet.  Me, heels ...........

If it requires a deep clean after using, my Life is too short to stuff a mushroom

I've been talking to a friend whose son had psoriasis - he had an emollient every night, wrapped in bandages - she can't off the top of her head remember the name.  It was painful to remove though

I found Aveeno bath treatment oatmeal powder wonderful.  I bought it on line.  It makes the bath really slippery so take care.   I don't think it had chemicals in it. Bath needs a good clean I just used normal cleaner and rinsed really well with loads of hot water.

Thanks! I'm afraid I'm starting to wonder if this is the best or even a necessary approach for me. As I have M.E. and live alone, it's not ideal to be risking slipping nor having to find the energy for such scrupulous cleaning out. I think some radical resetting regarding bathing is on the cards! I'm only supposed to use 8" of water in the bath with this. Measuring tape, anyone? All seems a bit of a "faff"!

I laid in a bath one morning last week as I needed a sluice down rather than a soak: it was about 5" and felt really uncomfortable  .  In 2ndWW they were allowed 5" I think.  Awful.


How about bicarb of soda?  Granma swore by it.  Good as a paste for burns too.

Keep coming with the ideas, CLKD. The old and simple ones are the best! I'm happy to report that I just had my maiden voyage and it wasn't too bad. I haven't examined the bath yet though! 🧐 I think the best plan is that I use the bath only occasionally and shower the rest of the time, exhausting though that is. Onwards!
