I never found this helped me but to be fair, I didn't stick with it for long enough really.  I think you need to take any supplement like this for at least 12 weeks before you know whether it works or not.  I'm inclined to give up easily on things that don't work quickly.

Some gain benefit from alternatives until their own hormones begin to wax and wane.

Do U keep a mood/food/symptom diary which may be of use.

I began taking evening primrose with starflower when I first started getting night sweats and a bit of insomnia and they worked for me. The night sweats and insomnia stopped. I've been taking them for 6 years now and the night sweats and insomnia have not returned. Annoyingly since July hot flushes (during the day) and joint and muscle pain have meant I've now started HRT. I'm undecided as to whether I'll keep the evening primrose and starflower going.

Hi GillGrant,

The active ingredient in Evening Primrose Oil is GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid).  A better alternative is Starflower (Borage) Oil, which contains about 3 times the amount/concentration of GLA, drop for drop.

I was advised to take Starflower by a Breast Consultant as an anti inflammatory for hormonal breast pain.  You need to take it every single day.

Just a word of warning about Evening Primrose oil and Starflower oil, they can cause PMS mood type symptoms in some women.
Checkout mumsnet regarding this. X
