New to vagifem - mood plummeted?
« on: March 21, 2021, 10:03:30 AM »

Ladies I’m using vagifem for the first time and am about 4 days in. I’m also due to start everol sequi after my next period.
I definitely feel my mood has plummeted over the last few days and yesterday I was very sensitive to family comments and almost at ‘storming off’ point on a few occasions. Today I think I might just stay in bed all day to avoid everyone and prevent being upset housework etc.
Did anyone else experience this when starting on it?
I’m 46 and peri

I shouldn't think it's anything to do with Vagifem, just "life, the universe and everything", not to mention your own hormones playing up in peri. I'd have a duvet day

You are peri - how were you during your menopause years, did you have dips prior to a bleed, I certainly did.

Some find that keeping a mood/symptom/food diary of use to chart progress.  Don't despair, continue with the 'vagifem' and note how you are after your next period.  Duvet day sounds good to me  ;)

During the first few weeks a small amount of Vagifem does go systemic and can cause breast tenderness, pelvic cramps (in my case), and other side effects so I suppose it might also effect your mood swings too.  Once the vagifem has plumped up and rehydrated the vaginal walls very little goes systemic and the side effects settle down.

Yes I have had symptoms like this before, so you may well be right that I shouldn't be blaming the vaccine.
Duvet day and junk food day has been had!

Yes I've had days like this before so I'll just ride it out and see what happens.
Thank you for replying and helping me feel less guilty about staying in bed today!

Hi Dierdrie

This really interesting and will be good if this settles for me as I have also noticed the pelvic pain, quite crippling at times.
I'll let you all know how I get on, thank you! Xxx

Dierdrie - How do you know Vagifem goes systemic to start with? I'm really hoping you're right because all sorts has gone haywire with me over the last 3 days since I started taking it. My husband thinks exactly what you have said - his instincts may be right!

Does it say in the leaflet in the box?   Once the vagina plumps up the symptoms seem to ease.  I never had problems with 'ovestin' but some do mention vague symptoms.

Hi,

2 vagifem a week is the same amount as 1 HRT pill a year. So the amount you will absorb would be tiny. Some women get minor physical symptoms and this  usually settles. It is amazing what stress and worrying can do when starting a medicine. If you are worried speak to your GP to reassure you.

I don't have any experience myself  but I do believe Vagifem or any other substance used vaginally will have a  systemic effect. For example; according to research birth control pills can be taken vaginally , you only need a higher dose to surpress ovulation. Man to Female transgenders take both estradiol pills and Oestrogel vaginally as it has, among others, a better absorption. Although Vagifem is in a smaller dose it will still have an effect.

Hi Iris67, I read it online, it was a report from trials that were done when the dosage was changed from 25mcg to 10mcg. It recorded the amount that went systemic in the first couple of weeks while the vaginal walls were thin and dry with both dosages and then the small amount after this time when plumped up and hydrated. Obviously the 10mcg was less systemic and was recommened for use, although the 25mcg was still within safe limits.  Very controversial has many thought this was more to do with profit than safety and now most women need at least 5 vagifem (5 x 10mcg)  per week to be comfortable, the old dosage (2 x 25mcg) used for many years safely.

My hair started shedding in vagifem so must have some systemic effect. I think some people bodies are sensitive to even the tiny dose and some aren’t. So if you feel a difference it’s likely it’s the Vagifem

Ladies

Thank you all for your responses. I find it fascinating how differently everyone responds to all the different types of treatments and it's always reassuring to hear someone report the same as I'm feeling.

I had a rough night last night with backache and cramps. I am due to have my period but I don't usually get this pain. I'm becoming nervous that I may be in for a really heavy period. My periods have been very light for the last 10 months or so.

I'm also very concerned that I might lose hair as mine is very fine already.

Thanks again you lovely lot   :-*
