HRT efficacy
« on: March 16, 2021, 06:55:15 PM »

I realise this is a bit of a weird post, but I’m curious to see if women are finding their hrt is still working as effectively after having their COVID19 vaccination.
About a week after having mine I started feeling my hot flushes returning, along with palpitations and restless leg problems. My restless leg problem is related to low estrogen  levels and has been well controlled with my combi patch for six years.
The day after my vaccination I had 24 hours of feeling rough and tired but then I felt ok again, it was only a week later the other symptoms appeared.
I can’t see how a vaccine could affect hormone levels but it’s making me wonder if it’s just coincidence I’m having the flushes etc again or if the vaccine has reduced the efficacy of my Evorel conti patch 🤔

There is supposed to be a link between Covid and oestrogen - more men get Covid than women because oestrogen has a protective effect apparently. I don't know how that would work with the vaccine though; it'll be interesting to see if anyone else has experienced this (I have my first one tomorrow so I'll let you know).

Yes I’ve read about that, supposedly younger women who are still producing plenty of estrogen themselves are more protected than women taking hrt. The Zoe app did a survey last year and the results from there showed that hrt didn’t provide extra protection against COVID. I know that certain medications, eg anti fungals, reduce the efficacy of hrt so I dare say others do too.
Thanks for your input racjen,it’s really got me thinking now and I’d be interested to hear if you notice anything around the 10/12 day mark after your vaccine. Hope you have no side effects 🤞🏻I had the Oxford Astra Zeneca by the way.

Hi linz57, this is just to ask if you can provide any references to antifungals reducing the efficacy of HRT. I hadn't heard of this before.
Many thanks,

Hi Joaniepat, I have no peer reviewed references, but about six years ago I had to take a course of Fluconazole alongside my hrt and I experienced bleeding and flushing. My then doctor suggested the Fluconazole could have interfered with the levels of estradiol in my system. I should have put “ may affect the efficacy levels” in my previous post.
A drug interaction website states this
Interactions between your drugs
Moderate
fluconazole estradiol
Applies to: fluconazole, Estradiol Patch (estradiol)
Using fluconazole and estradiol together may alter the levels of estradiol in your body. This combination may cause nausea, vomiting, or vaginal bleeding. If you take both medications together, tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. You may need a dose adjustment if you take both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor

Just posting on here again to see if any other women are now finding their hrt is not working too well since having the Astra Zeneca vaccine.
At first I thought it was maybe coincidence that mine stopped being as effective, but I came across a few women on Dr. Louise Newtons Instagram page a few weeks ago who were finding the same.
Also, some young women are reporting disruption to their menstrual cycles.

I haven't had a return of symtoms, i use Estrogel but i had the Pfizer jab. My 17 year old daughter had Pfizer too, she hasn't mentioned any cycle changes. Is this possible link just with AZ?

I had a return of symptoms for about a month after my AZ jab. I didn'trreact well to it though, severe headache for a couple of days, felt rough for about a week, stiff arm and neck for a couple of weeks.

Thanks ladies. Tinkerbell, I’m not sure yet how many are Astra Zeneca and how many Pfizer related as most of the negative news we’re hearing is from the AZ at the moment..  Tim Spector and his team at the Zoe COVID tracker app are apparently  going to  look into the menstrual irregularities in general and I have asked if they will also consider menopausal women and the effect of the vaccine on their hrt. I  suppose in time they will start adding in more questions on the daily log in pages. It will be interesting to see what results emerge.
Sheila99, that’s interesting to hear, are your meno symptoms now fully controlled again? I did notice I got aches and pains and some hot flushes for about a month after the vaccine but  they’ve resolved again. It’s now the return of VA symptoms that’s the problem. It makes me dread my second dose shortly 😬

Very interesting post, thanks for bringing this up.

I'm due for my second shot (AZ) this weekend and while I had some post vaccine symptoms after the first one (bad taste in my mouth, more fatigue than usual and I forget the others, headache amongst other things I think, haha and forgetfulness  ::) ) I didn't really think to monitor post menopausal symptoms (they're all over the place at the moment anyway) - but it could be that some of what I was experiencing might have been due to the vaccine affecting oestrogen in my system.

I'll keep a watchful eye on things after jab number 2, and a watchful eye on this thread as I think this is quite important.

Thanks for posting this I have also found my hrt is not working since AZ jabs. And have been searching for anybody else saying the same thing!  I have all symptoms returned. GP finally listened and blood test showed estradiol below detection limits even though I'm on the same dose of estradot and utrogestan as have been fine on for a couple of years. Have now been put on lenzetto spray but 2 weeks in no difference. Has anybody found an answer does dose need increasing?

Interesting
Strangely enough after my 1st jab March 27th  ( 3 weeks later I had my first aniexty episode ) and thinking about it since my 2nd vaccine in June they seem to have gotten worse

Could be coincidence I suppose but I always blamed my hormones & patches

However my GP said it could be a number for things Covid / Jabs / Hormones

Makes you think 🤔
