Method of taking utrogestan
« on: February 02, 2021, 02:10:09 PM »

I’ve just been to see my GP as I felt I had the start of a prolapse (she confirmed I have although it is mild and to ensure I do pelvic floor exercises). We had a brief discussion about my HRT. I have Estradot 75 patches and utrogestan. She had suggested some time ago that I use the utrogestan from day 1 to 25 for a no bleed. I tried this but felt like I had permanent PMT so decided to go back to cyclical method. Anyway I mentioned to her that I was using it vaginally as when I took it orally I didn’t bleed. (This was how I found the bulge down there). She said she hadn’t heard about using it that way, she was very surprised that I was using oral capsules and not pessaries. I referred to this group and said many women use it this way and has been approved by their doctors. I wondered if anyone has any comments on this.

It's a beurocracratic problem. It isn't licensed in the UK for vaginal use though it is in the rest of Europe. The 200mg capsules are licensed here for use vaginally for IVF but only the 100mg is licensed for hrt. Can anyone spot the logic?

I did a post on this a while back. I'll try and find it!

I also don’t bleed if I take it orally and I also got dizziness .

Hello ladies

I realise that the Utrogestan capsule can be used vaginally but I still worry about this method. I can't get my head around the fact that a capsule that is designed to encounter the acidic environment of the stomach can also be suitable for use in the vagina. My pharmacist also queried this a long time ago. I also wonder why we can't have 100mcg Utrogestan pessaries for HRT. Perhaps even use a 200mcg pessary cut in half? Come to think of it why are there 200mcg pessaries for  IVF if a regular 200mcg capsule would work just as well?

Sorry to not  pick ladies but it does bother me.
I suppose in an ideal world we would see confirmation from the manufacturers that the oral capsule is also suitable to be used as a pessary.

Having said all that I have been using Utrogestan orally but  feel that I am  experiencing side effects so I will now change to vaginally. This is something that I have done before so I guess that have made my peace with it lol!

Wishing you all well.

Hello again ladies.

I have just read this thread again and I see that sheila99 has discovered that IVF users can use the capsules vaginally. Does that mean that there are no Utrogestan pessaries manufactured at all I wonder.

Sorry to go on ladies and I am sure this question has been sorted out many times before so just ignore me and my ramblings lol!

Take care everyone.

I actually have the 200mg because the gp couldn't find the 100mg when he prescribed them. They come with an applicator and should only be used vaginally for IVF. They're off white squishy capsules which I believe are similar to the 100mg?

Hello again ladies.

Sheila99 -  thank you for your post about your 200mg capsules. They sound the same as the 100mcg ones but when you say squishy do you mean like a fish oil capsule? The ones I have are round and hard but can be squished when pressed. Does that sound the same to you?

This may sound a bit mad but is it possible to send a photo of  what you have been prescribed ? I think many ladies would be reassured to actually see an example of what we are all talking about. Don't worry if you don't want to or if it isn't possible, just a mad idea as I say.

Wishing you well.

The utrogestan 100mg are round white balls, they are filled with liquid so whilst they may feel hard if you give them a squeeze they move, they are used vaginally and always have been for IVF as well, I have never heard of a Utrogestan  pessary. I used the 200mg at one stage and if I recall they were more egg shaped than round.  :-\

Then click on See Related Product Image. Yes, they can be squished when pressed like a fish oil capsule. Apart from the shape (rugby ball rather than round) they look very similar to the 100mg.
