Novofem (Sequential HRT) Query
« on: January 17, 2021, 09:14:34 AM »

Hi Ladies
I'm 56 and was prescribed Novofem 13 months ago as I was perimenopausal (4 months since I'd had a period). I'm due a review with my GP next week. My query is, how do I know when I'm menopausal? Do I go by the 'breakthrough' bleeding? After 13 months, I still bleed for 5 - 6 days every month. Thank you

Hi Tootingalong

 :welcomemm:

You wont know when you are post-menopausal once you start HRT. Some women do stop the withdrawal bleed on cyclical HRT ( I did around age 57-8), but some always bleed and to some extent it depends on dose as well as your body.

Why do you want to know? If it is because you want to go on a bleed-free HRT then you can always ask to try a conti HRT for a few months and see if the bleeds stop. If your bleeds are still heavy then this is not likely to work.

I hope the HRT is otherwise suiting you and helping with your symptoms.

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently on my 8th day of bleeding. Frankly, I was hoping that the bleeding would diminish. One of the main reasons for me being started on HRT was to, hopefully, avoid osteoporosis, as it was discovered during recent orthopeadic surgery that my bones are "very thin" (resulting in additional screws being inserted in my bone graft). My cousin recently reminded me that our Gran was still menstruating in her 60s, so maybe it's just a familial thing which HRT won't change!
