Question About Utrogestan - Now I'm Confused!
« on: December 29, 2020, 08:36:46 PM »

Hello ladies.

Due to continuing problems with internal shaking, low mood and tearfulness etc I have recently restarted HRT.

I am using four pumps of  Oestrogel, two in the morning and two at night plus 100mcg of Utrogestan orally.

I have been reading comments about Utrogestan and trying to remember how things were when I used it previously. As I have managed to confuse myself I have taken a look at the Patient Information Leaflet and it says the following :-

- Take this medicine by mouth
- Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water
-Take this medicine at bedtime
-Do not take this medicine with food
-Take your oestrogen HRT at the same time as Utrogestan

I always have some supper just before I go to bed so although I won't be swallowing the capsule with food, my stomach won't be empty. It would be difficult to have my supper an hour or two before bed as that would move it closer to my dinner lol.

I was also surprised that the instruction was to take Utrogestan and Oestrogen at the same time. I have been using some gel in the morning and the Utro at night but maybe that's wrong?

Any thoughts on all this ladies?

As always your comments would be much appreciated.

Take care everyone.

Kathleen, the bit about taking the oestrogen and Utrogestan at the same time might refer to oral E. If you were using a patch for E you would have it on for 3-4 days anyway.

That's the way I understand it too. If you're lucky enough not to have any side effects from utro you may not notice if you absorb a little more. If you take it vaginally it makes no difference when you eat.

Hello ladies.

Thank you so much for your comments.

Joaniepat - Good point about the oral E and the patch, makes complete sense.

Belle1 - the two hour wait between eating and bedtime is a problem for me so I will need to have a think. I wonder why more details on this aren't included on the PIF?

Sheila 99 -  I may go back to using the Utro vaginally if my present regime doesn't work out.

Thanks again ladies and take care.

Hi I believe it means that you should use oestrogen as well as Utrogestan... it doesn’t mean use them at the same time of day.

Utrogestan should be taken on an empty stomach as food increases the absorption . X

Hello again ladies.

Dotty - thank you for your reply. I see what you mean about taking Utrogestan as well as Oestrogen.

It's a pity about the empty stomach thing as I need my supper and don't want to go to bed hungry lol. There must be other ladies who eat within two hours of bedtime so their stomachs are not be empty.

Thanks again and take care.

I’m by no means an expert, but I think the more important part is to be consistent. I definitely look it within two hours of food. Sometimes with food if I was hungry close to bedtime. As a shift worker, sometimes I took it 12 hours early because it made sense to take it before bed even if that was actually in the morning. All those variations and I still think it worked well enough for me to do its intended job. Personally, I think you’re fine to do what’s best for you and if there’s food in your stomach, so be it, but try to be consistent with that as much as you can.

Hello again ladies

Shannonplussed - thank you for your comment. I hadn't thought about the problem of shift work complicating things.  I won't have any trouble being consistent as I always have the same thing for supper - a small bowl of oats and dried fruit and a biscuit.

I will stick to this routine for a while especially as I have only just gone back to HRT and I don't want to change too many things at once.

Thanks again and take care.

Thank you Dotty, that makes sense. That said, this Australian Prof also thinks they should be taken at the same time of day, or night in this case.
