Hi warwick01, do you always shake the bottle before you press down the pump?

Yes, they do seem to give a smaller dose as they get empty. I always have a full bottle on the go so I can compare how much I get from that and the emptier one.

YES. My mood absolutely declines near the bottom of the pump. I’ve noticed it but not done much about it until this last pump. I wrote on it the day I started it, and calculated how many days I can use it for and wrote that on there. I’m in Canada and the leaflet for my 80g pump pack says it’s good for about a month/32 days at the rate of 2 pumps a day. So 64 doses. I’m using 4 pumps a day, so I’ll only get 16 days out of it. Curious to see how much is left after that time. Once, I switched early when the pump felt light and I felt my mood slipping. I couldn’t believe how many more pumps I got out of it (into the garbage).

Hi warwick01, do you always shake the bottle before you press down the pump?

Are you meant to do this?  I never have.  Although I have wondered about decreasing efficacy towards the end of the bottle

thanks

I wondered that too. It's 2 years since I read the patient information leaflet so maybe I missed it - off to check...

Mine doesn’t say anywhere to shake it, and I just tried it and because it’s gel, it didn’t seem to do anything. Like thick hair gel—it’s mixed well and doesn’t seem to separate.

I've been reading about hydroalcoholic gels since the beginning of the pandemic and I've learned that they are non-Newtonian fluids; in simple terms, they can change viscosity depending on stress, so it wouldn't be advisable to shake Oestrogel bottle, it would make it runnier. Moreover, the gel is contained inside a pouch which is tightly packed without air inside (airless pouch dispenser). The manufacturer has recently changed the inner pouch from aluminium foil (Rexam) to plastic cylinder (Lablabo) which can be affecting homogeneity, although they say there is no air intake because the pouch is supposed to collapse every time the system is primed. I suppose this mechanism can be less effective when there's not much gel left in the pouch, allowing some air inside and potentially decreasing the dose.

This is from a recent article on hand sanitisers.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378517320304154

'An evaluation of the effect of ethanol on the consistency of the hydrogel prepared in hydroalcoholic media is not straightforward; comparison studies on hydrogels in pure water and in hydroalcoholic media are lacking.'

Hmmm... The latest half full bottle judders as the plunger comes out. I hadn't noticed this before, just that it takes a long time as they get emptier. I wonder if this is letting air in? I may be imagining it but it seems to give a smaller dose when it's fuller now. I haven't noticed it getting runner but that might say more about the Arctic conditions in my bedroom!

Hi, thanks for all the information.

I definitely notice a difference at the lower third part of the container. appears more watery and less quantity. Always feel I'm getting full effect the first 2 weeks of new applicator.

Will monitor Wx

I have exactly the same issue.
I’ve always been aware of this.
I notice a drop in mood and efficacy as I reach the end of the canister.
I’ve tried counting 64 measures so that I can then move onto a new canister but I lose track.
It would be so much easier if they attached a visible counter system to these canisters so that after 64 measures it can be discarded.
Im actually trying to switch back to patches because even on 4pumps of estrogel, splitting am and pm,
I can still feel peaks and troughs through out the day.

The constant quest to feel well is so frustrating,

Hi
joesmum

Isn't it just?  How do you find splitting the dose rather than all in one go.  Ive been toying with the idea of doing two first thing (I'm up at 6am), then two about tea time, so that its not a problem for my partner by the time we go to bed.

Currently (because I WFH now) I do all at about 10am

Thanks D  :)

Hi

My issue is feeling lightheaded usually mid day/afternoon. I currently use 2 pumps around 10.00pm at night. Wake feeling ok then apply 1 pump around 8.00am, If I go shopping a couple of hours later feel a bit wired and sweaty. Settles after a few hours but get lightheaded and feel faint in the afternoon especially if out and about..... so confusing. I am 61 post menopause. GP keeps telling me I shouldn't need HRT at my age :(

Any thoughts please ??
