HRT and high blood pressure
« on: December 27, 2020, 01:19:02 PM »

Hello lovely ladies, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas this year. Albeit, a very different Christmas indeed.
Just wondered if any of you started HRT and you blood pressure went up?
I am on the mirena coil and 75mcg estrogen patch. I changed my patches over last night and this morning I checked my blood pressure and its 130 over 100 with a 75 heart rate/pulse. I has a 3 night stay in hospital in march where I had every test known including an angiogram.  In the end it was all put  down to white coat syndrome and anxiety.
I admit anxiety is something I suffer with but usually when I take my blood pressure by the third go it has calmed to a reasonable level but today it isn't dropping to the usually over 80 rate.  I do think the batteries need changing in my machine too so maybe it's a false reading. Just wondered if replacing my patch last night had anything to do with it. My first day on patches I was very fuzzy headed and had a touch of vertigo but I am now about 3 into the patch. Had the coil inserted around the 2and of December. Just wondered if anybody had any experience or advice. I know it's early days and only 3 weeks into hrt and my body is adjusting but just looking for some advice. So far, I have not noticed any difference yet taking HRT. Just more foggy headed. Of course it's christmas so I have over indulged in a few desserts but nothing hectic. Wine also is a culprit.  ::) acid reflux has also ramped up to crazy levels.
Any advice would be greatly received as always you are a brilliant bunch and the strength I find in this group is unbelievable.
I should add I also started an antacid 3 days ago.  Would that have any impact?

Hi, I was put onto Femoston 2/10 back in mid Sept. I was also put on cerazette.
I was only on them both for 1 month, during the time I was on them I never felt well. Bad stomach, shaky, tired, weepy, weight gain.. Basically more symptoms of peri just intensified. I had an appt for a meds check with the gp 1 month after starting them. During the month I'd developed bad headaches which progress to migraines and I was always feeling off.
When I went for my meds check I was in the middle of a 3 day long migraine. The doc actually commented how rough I was looking. She took my BP 3 times while I was there and each time it was sky high. Even making allowances for been at the doctors she said it was worryingly high.
She told me to stop the HRT and bcp. I did this but unfortunately the damage was done and I suffered a bleed behind my eye from the high blood pressure causing the migraines. I had to attend the emergency eye clinic where I was diagnosed with a bleed and pvd. I lost sight for a couple of days and it's still mot fully returned now 2 months on.
I'd never had high BP before I started HRT, and have had regular checks since and it's completely fine and as usual for me.
My dos is now very reluctant to prescribe me another HRT as she knows I may have another adverse reaction to a different one. But I'm really struggling this last 3 weeks or so, all the peri symptoms have come back with a vengeance and I feel horrendous. I'm going to try and get an appt to see about starting a gel or patch. My bodies a mess from being on bcp, then changing that twice, then into HRT and bcp and then coming off completely. Had stared cerazette again 2 weeks ago,but I've stopped again as that was maiming me feel so weepy and ratty and low moods.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to make you aware some people do have issues with high BP and HRT.

Hi Laib1,
Thank you for your reply. I'm so sorry about your experience. Gosh, I've never heard of having hrt and Bcp at the same time. I am so sorry that this happened. I've had mild headaches when I change my patch over but no migraines. I had terrible eye sight as it is. I hope your eye heals in time. Very scary experience I imagine. I hope you find relief for your symptoms soon. Thank you for your advice.

Hi Peri-wrecked,

I also have very high bloodpressure on HRT, no matter which one I 've tried and no matter how high a dose. At the GP my bloodpressure was over 210. He send me to an endocrinologist. Bloodtest /24- hour urine test and saliva test revealed high cortisol. Although I stopped HRT 5 months ago my bloodpressure is still very high; 24- hour reading shows 140 at night/ 180 during the day. I've been on BCP for 35 years and never had high bloodpressure. It started with HRT.

Apparently high estrogen, with emphasis on high, increases Cortisol Binding Globuline (CBG of Trancortin). It means more cortisol is bound by CBG and less bio-availble for our body to use. High cortisol raises bloodpressure amongst other symptoms. In my case HRT gave me a lot of menopause symptoms I didn't have on BCP and I always felt it has lowered my estrogen as it made me very ill.

It doesn't mean this happend to you, Peri- wrecked, as it's s quite possible I' m predisposed where cortisol is concerned but It could be a clue.

Lab1, with BCP I mean ethinylestradiol/ progestin,  Cerazette is a progesterone- only pill, so without estrogen. Ethinylestradiol is much more potent then estradiol in HRT.

@Alicess
So how do i best go forwards with HRT or bcp?
Was what I was on just pure bad luck or bad combination? I'm not good with meds as it is. Also I have no clue what should or shouldn't help HRT or bcp wise.
Thanks

Thanks Alicess,
My blood pressure has been 140 over 100.  Yours seems to have been very high. I will monitor mine though just incase. I was hoping HRT would be the answer to my problems but I might just have to get used to the new me. I'm only 38. The thoughts of feeling this way forever is daunting.  I hope we all find relief soon. Thank you for the reply.  :)

Lab1, I don''t understand why you' ve been given cerazette alongside femoston in the first place. Femoston already contains enough progesterone with such a low dose of estradiol. So much progesterone will counteract the estrogen. I think you' ve had to much progesterone and  that's one of the reasons you felt bad.

I think it would be wise to ask for a refferal to a endocrinologist and and ask for a full bloodtest and cortisol 24 urine. With such a high bloodpressure they should investigate further and I'm surprised they didn't already.

I think it's important that you find out what happend before you start anything new.
