Mirena coil
« on: December 09, 2020, 02:34:17 PM »

So I have had the mirena coil in for 12 weeks now and giving it serious thought to have it removed! No problems to begin with now for last 4 weeks have had stomach issues low mood and generally feeling rubbish! I know this could also be caused by estrogen problems but my thinking is if I have it removed and have Sandrena only for a few weeks I would be able to see what the problem is!
Any thoughts appreciated

Hi Flan 747,

Sorry you're feeling rubbish. I decided not to have the Mirena fitted in the end and am continuing with utrogestan. I too have really uncomfortable tummy at the moment - bloating, burping, gurgling and generally feeling too full despite loss of appetite. I'm also trying to figure out the cause. As you say, no doubt oestrogen related! GP prescribed me Omeprazole but that seemed to make it worse. Have you tried any treatments for it? I'm currently munching through my body weight in Rennies and have started taking slippery elm as suggested by someone on here. We'll see....

So hard to know what to do for the best isn't it.

Hi Jane50
I tired Utrogestron and that made me feel very low and has the tummy issues! I have tried Gaviscon and Rennies but stopped as they didn’t seem to make any difference! I just think if I have it removed and go estrogen only for a couple of weeks I may know where I’m at! To be honest I’ve even thought about stopping the HRT to see where I’m at! I’ve posted this before and like someone said I can always go back on it!
Good luck

Sorry to hear you’re having problems with the mirena flan747.  They are all classic issues with the mirena I’m afraid.  I had mine removed after persevering for 6 months as it never got any better.  Although for some women symptoms settle and those (lucky) women seem to swear by them.  I am glad I tried it, but I wouldn’t have another.

Some of us struggle with any sort of progesterone and it’s possible you’re on of those (like me).  You could stick with it and see if it settles (received wisdom suggests 6 months).  I know within 48 hours of having mine removed all my troubling symptoms had resolved.  Sorry I have no better solutions, but wishing you well with whatever you decide x

I’ve given it a good go but do feel I’m going to be like you! I have heard of lozenges that you can get for your progesterone but obviously not from the GP! I’m looking at all other options! Fed up of trying so many different things and nothing works can I ask what you went in after having the coil removed?

Hi there.
I've had two mirena coils.... One still in place, yes I had low mood initially but was prescribed Oestrogen 1mg to help with it..... Maybe see a Nurse Practioner for advice first.
I swear by mine, at 57 I have been peri menopausal for 9 years, still ovulating.....
All the best

I’m in 4mg Sandrena so can’t go any higher! I’m currently under a lady who specialises in nutrition and HRT and she has suggested I cut down the  Sandrena gradually as it maybe that causing the problems not the coil! Starting tonight so 🤞

I tried that for the recommended 3 months but still had terrible low mood . Hoping that the reduction in estrogen is what I need! She feels the specialist I have been under has been concentrating way too much on blood test results so we will see

Curious to hear how you do on the lower Sandrena. I got my (2nd) Mirena same time as you and I’ve been increasing my Estrogel and maybe I need to decrease it a wee bit. It’s so hard to know which direction. I have some really good days and some days where I’m low or anxious and so irritable. I want to hold onto the good days and bottle that magic! I was having some bloating and stomach upset early after getting my Mirena but it has passed. I hope it’s just a matter of finding your estrogen dose sweet spot.

Perinowpost - yes I was taking it every night

Shannonplussed- I have down the same as you up and down and never got the sweet spot re dose ! So now it’s time to take charge and lower it and hopefully stop it to see where I am with it! I’m being positive now but I’m sure there will be troubles ahead but I’ve been trying different regimes for 18months now so need to maybe go back to basics! I am worried things will return but I know I can easily increase again if needed

I absolutely couldn’t tolerate it every night. I can only do 7 days (under supervision), I’ve been using it like this for about 5 years and having regular scans and it works for me.  It means I have a monthly withdrawal bleed of course, but it’s worth it to feel good the rest of the time and get all the benefits of hrt.  If you chose to do a sequi regime Utrogestan is recommended for 10/12 days, but I’ve never managed that it makes me too ill x
