I use it every night and have done for a few years now. I also use vagifen 5 times a week . I need both to stay comfortable, the dosage is very small and if i use them less than this i become sore.

Use it nightly for another 2 weeks, sometimes the vagina needs extra applications to keep comfy.  If you have the need2pee sensations, maybe take 'nurofen' or similar?  There are creams i.e. Sylc or another, name escapes me  ::) to apply gently to the outer areas. Do read the vaginal atrophy thread.

Thank you for your replies.. i guess its trial and error.  the gyne instructions were two times a week that seemed a success for a while, but now seems to have stopped working, either that or im having a reaction to it, iv been on it about 10 weeks now...  i should get another phone call from the gyne  the beginning of january..  due to the covid iv only ever had a phone call from him.. my gp suggests every other night, so i will give that a go and see if it settles.. having not used ovestin before i didnt know how much it can be used a week. x

Twice a week is usually a starting point after the 2 week every night initial dose and this works for some, if not your doctor can increase the dosage. I would definately try every other night as your doctor suggests until you can speak to your gynae again.

H Hellen

I have also recently swapped from Vagifem to Ovestin. (Only used VF for a few days as it made me feel a lot worse due to the residue). I had initial stinging/ burning with Ovestin, then relief for a week or so, then soreness came back.

My GP had told me to use it every night for 4 weeks and then reduce to twice weekly. I found that the soreness returned before the 4 weeks were up though so she said I could carry on nightly for another 3 weeks only. I am now trying alternate nights while I wait for a GP app next week and I'm using moisturiser on the night I don't use Ovestin to see if that helps (I had stopped all moisturisers whilst using Ovestin because I was worried they might stop the Ovestin being absorbed).

Several people on here have said that Ovestin is ok to use nightly longer term though. I will report back what my GP tells me next week about worsening of symptoms again whilst still using every night and long term use. I wonder if sometimes it's to do with our own hormones (what's left of them!) going up and down, so sometimes the body needs more and we feel sore again, then it may settle again  ???

I was also told something called the Estring can be helpful as it gives a steady, low dose of hormone if Ovestin isn't working for you.  :) ???

TnToast,

I agree with what you said about hormones make our virginal atrophy worst or better.

I take Vagifem for a year now and Ovestin 6 months before that. I’m always up and down, I have no idea why it would work for weeks then without doing anything different a flare up.

I’m lucky my doctor allows me to use what I want when I want. So frustrating you think your doing well about 90% better then all goes crap and I’m feeling my virgina all day long  >:(

I use both, Vagifem inside 5 times a week and Ovestin outside and around urethra every night and still have flare ups now and then, usually triggered by stress. I use Dermovate when this happens for a few days and it usually sorts it quite quickly. Its just about managing the atrophy, the only time I'm 100% is when im not sitting all day at work or on holiday, the sunshine always helps and i find taking vit d helps in the winter months. Dehydration dont help, I often forget to drink until I'm thirsty then it's too late.

I just googled Dermovate, I see that’s it a prescription medicine. Can I asked was it your doctor who recommended you use it?
No problem on the Dehydration side I have at least 3 litres of water everyday. Plenty of sunshine I live in Australia. Maybe stress as I’ve got a specialist doctor appointment on Wednesday about my fissure problem (a cut on your ass that hurts like hell to poo, had this since 1st of July) so I am worried about my appointment.

Yes, it was prescibed by my gynae a couple of years ago and i can order it from the doctor as and when needed. I was so sore back then anything i tried would burn and sting but after 3 weeks of Dermovate twice a day i had healed enough to tolerate the estriol cream so it could start doing the job. I find Ovestin great for the outside and Vagifem inside, ive tried both separate but they work best together for me with the Dermovate for the occasional blip.  Hope you get some help for your fissure, i know they can take a while to heal.

Thanks Deirdre, my fissure is the best it’s been since July, but still hurts before, during and after I poo.
At least now I don’t make sounds of pain when I poo.
