I am much slimmer now so do I need less oestrogen on HRT?
« on: November 22, 2020, 03:46:31 PM »

Hi all,
I had Mirena fitted in January. I was so worried about putting on weight on Mirena so I started a diet based on 5:2 and intermittent fasting. After losing over 10 kilos in 10-11 months, I am now 49.5 kilos.
So because there is less of me now, does that mean I should take less oestrogen? I was on 75mg of Evorel oestrogen only patches but I realised that I was getting impatient and snappy with others (but not depressed). I thought this may be due too much oestrogen and gradually over 2 weeks reduced to 50mg recently. I feel a bit miserable but it has been a week only. Would this settle over time or should I go back to 75mg?
If you can share your opinion, I will appreciate it.
Many thanks in advance.
Regards,

I don't know what you should do but my bad temper was from too little oestrogen not too much. Do you have any other symptoms? 1 week is probably not long enough to tell. Congrats on the weight loss.

If bad temper might be the progesterone, in this case Mirena, what can you do about it (when you can’t change the dosage!)? Increase estrogen? Is this the same situation with “feeling like a box of frogs”?

Nicky_boo I have a different school of thought but I expect Hurdity will be along to correct me if I’m wrong. I’m wondering if your earlier dosage of estrogen was fine, and as you lost weight, doesn’t that liberate some additional estrogen, the stuff that is stored in fatty tissue? So perhaps your degrading mood is actually your body calling for more estrogen, since you’re no longer storing much of it in fat stores. Thoughts?

All,

Thanks very much for your input but I am more confused now. Why does it have to be that difficult? I bet if Menopause was a male problem, there would have been 30 sec hormone test kits by now. We have to suffer for months and years in this trial and error world. Of course much better compared to being labelled as crazy in the middle ages but still not good enough.

Thanks again and any more input will be greatly received if anyone gained or lost weight on HRT.

Stay safe.

The progesterone in the Mirena coil is very localised, the amount of hormone that actually enters your blood steam is tiny and highly unlikely to be causing your problem.
It’s likely that you need more oestrogen not more - fat cells store oestrogen which is why it is common to put weight on during menopause because your body is trying to hold into as much oestrogen as it can. If you’ve lost weight, your body is holding less oestrogen than before so it would make sense you need to put more in.
If your symptoms are coming back on a lower dose that kind of says it all really.
