HRT minefield
« on: October 27, 2020, 10:43:00 AM »

I'm hoping some of you lovely ladies can give me your experience to help direct me where to start as I begin my HRT journey.

Currently on nothing after trying many combined pills, none of which suited, but I can see I'm going rapidly down hill again on nothing.

Gp and meno clinic happy to start me on HRT, but they never suggested which one.

I asked for gel and utrogestan. Will have a tough fight for utrogestan as am in Scot. And I just want to get started.

So, gel and patches have less clot risk (and because the many pills gave me immense side affects) I thought best to start with gel or patch. But now I'm wondering if a lot of folks start on tablets.

I want to start with low dose of both estrogen and progesterone, but I notice progesterone is often same dose, with different estrogen doses.

I'd really appreciate some advice and experience. I'm 44. Been suffering for 3 years. I need quality of life.

You're right that transdermal is safer so gel or patch would be the best option. You could look at the Treatments tab to see what the options are then perhaps ask your pharmacy which they can get. Unfortunately you can't tell what will suit you and what won't so you really have to try it. You get a skewed view on this site because people here tend to be the few that have problems not the many who don't. The chances are you will be fine on whatever you try. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you so much Shiela99. Yes. You are right, I should factor in that the forum will contain more info on those having difficulty.

I've had a look at the treatment part of the website. Good shout. Looks like just one type of patch available. Patches seem to be higher dose than low dose pills... So perhaps at 44, I should just start with pills.

Got my eye on femoston 1/10 as I wasn't good on some of the more androgenic progesterones in my contraceptive pill trials...

Anyone think femoston is a good place to start over patch or gel with provera (given my utrogestan refusal!)

Hi I’m 40 and just starting my HRT journey too. I already had a Mirena coil fitted so that takes care of the progesterone and because it’s local to the uterus it means no side effects because hardly any actually enters your blood stream. My dr prescribed gel because it’s safer and because you can alter your own dose much easier. She said if it makes a difference to my symptoms (she is sceptical and thinks it’s all due to anxiety) after 3 months I can swap to patches as it’s less of a faf having to put gel on every day.
My mum had tablets of oestrogen and progesterone and they worked fine for her.
I guess you won’t know till you try, good luck. I’m hoping I see a difference in symptoms soon, although it’s only been a week.

Thanks Paz23.

I guess already having the mirena makes it easier. What symptoms do you have??? Is it just anxiety???

I was on cerazette mini pill before avd would have loved to use that as the prog, but not high enough I believe. Or certainly not licenced for it.

I think I might ask for the tablets first, then take it from there. I'm just too scared that getting a mirena now could give me side affects, given that all the contraceptive pills were awful... And a lot it was the prog causing issues. 😳.

Good luck with your gel. Hope it helps. X
