Femonston2/10
« on: October 26, 2020, 06:55:17 PM »

Hello, I am 55 and assume, postmenopausal. I stopped having periods in my late 30s due to having had a mirena coil inserted.
I started on HRT at 49, Femonston 1/10. Moved up to 2/10 and all was well
Over a month ago I switched to Oestrogel and utrogestan because it is ‘safer’.
It was a disaster ....all my symptoms came back and I simply couldn’t get the dose right .
I’ve decided to go back on Femonston2/10 and wondering it is the right move seen as I am (possibly) post meno and it’s a sequential HRT.
What do you think?
Should I be taking Femonston conti?

Hi mariawd

Your post got missed.

If you feel better on Femoston 2/10 than on 1/10 then no reason not to continue at your age. You don't know that you are definitely post-menopausal but even if you are, you can still continue with sequential HRT as long as you wish. Many of us do including me in mid 60's! If you can cope with having a bleed or if the advantages and benefits of the regime you prefer outweigh the inconvenience of continuing with a bleed then there is your answer. Also of course once you reach 60 there is a general presumption not to take tablet hRT due to potential increased stroke risk but you are a long way from that point yet! Also if necessary you can use the time to make sure you minimise any risks through attaining a healthy BMI if you need to, improving diet and exercise, reducing alcohol, giving up smoking etc - all to help keep your blood pressure down too. The other thing is that Femoston conti does not come in 2 mg doses so you would be having lower oestrogen so if 1 mg didn;t do it for you then Fem conti won't either. It is always worth at some point trying to decrease but if your symptoms return then you would need to increase again. There is a marginally increased risk of endometrial cancer if you continue with sequential HRT but this is not considered a significant risk and any abnormal bleeding should always be reported to your GP.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you so much for your reply Hurdity.
I am sleeping better and my sweats have reduced since starting back on Femonston.
I am only on day three so not getting my hopes up yet.
I noticed a dark jelly like discharge this morning though which has puzzled me as I expected a ‘period’ nearer the end of the pack but not this early in the cycle.
Why do you think this has occurred?

Having read some old posts on this forum I’m thinking the bleed/discharge may be due to stopping utrogestan *last one taken on Sunday am* and switching to Fem 2 on Monday morning.

Exactly - you've worked it out! Withdrawal of progesterone will most often lead to bleeding or spotting and this includes reducing the dose or changing to another type. As always if there is any abnormal bleeding which persists, or that you are concerned about then do see your doc.
