I agree, oatcakes - are not in my 100 top fave foods either!  But they are convenient & needs must!

LOL ladies, I hope you're not thinking I was advising a diet based on carbs and fruit juice!

I was just pointing out that she could try eating carbs or fruit juice after an episode to confirm that it's hypoglycaemia.

Transient hypoglycaemic episodes are different from reactive or postprandial hypoglycaemia, which occurs after a meal rich in carbs.

I just thought of the link between estradiol and increase in insulin sensitivity because she has mentioned that the onset of symptoms have coincided with starting HRT. Reactive hypoglycaemia can occur independently of HRT and is usually idiopathic.

How are you doing, Roobee?

Still happening on and off, sometimes worse than others. I’m trying to eat little and often and making good foods choices, mainly 😂
You lost me on that last paragraph 🤣
I can’t get a doctors appointment for a blood test for diabetes for a couple weeks ☹️ Doesn’t seem as if you can find out any other way .
The feeling is beginning to annoy me a bit now, as I feel very tired and wobbly

Hi Roobee

I haven't been on the forum recently but I can relate to this. I am someone who gets what is known as (non-diabetic) "reactive hypoglycaemia" from time to time although I am not diabetic. It happens in the morning if I take vigorous exercise ( even a good walk) and don't have enough breakfast and has got worse in recent years. I have to have a pretty big brek if I'm going to exercise classes (now sadly stopped) at 10 am for example. I also like Taz used to get it during the second part of my natural menstrual cycle.  The tell-tale sign is that I might go from feeling a little bit hungry through to full hypoglycaemic symptoms very quickly (weak, wobbly, shaky and my face dripping with sweat and desperate sugar cravings!).

More recently also when I took norethisterone to clear my womb lining (the same prog in Evorel conti) I got it very badly - but I know how to manage it with slow release foods, protein rich meals etc.

I would say it's generally to do with the effect of the progestogen rather than the oestrogen - and I think this is a known phenomenon. Oestrogen and progesterone have differential effects on blood sugar. The point is even if your body requires more fuel (eg due to increased oestrogen) it shouldn't cause these symptoms, just normal hunger - but the increased progestogen - especially an artificial one - may well have this effect. I stand to be corrected though if anypone has research on this! (Haven't looked it up recently).

The absolute worst thing you can do is eat sweet things little and often - like the mars bars. Complex carbs, lots of fruits and veg and protein. Cut out sugar and refined carbs as much as you can and learn to recognise the signs so you can eat something no sugary before the symptoms start. Sugar will just cause an insulin spike and make things worse long term.

Hurdity x

I have tried to find info about this but it only leads to links discussing diabetic patients using HRT. Can’t seem to find anything that discusses the effects on a non diabetic person (which hopefully I am) 🤞🏻
Can’t get a blood test for a while to check that out.

Hi Roobee
I definitely get this feeling at times too, but haven't "journalled it" so I could see which stage in my HRT I'm at...I will from now on though.

Agree with CLKD that eating little and often works well, perhaps some little protein bars or flapjacks would be good? Or if you're disciplined enough to weigh out some mixed nuts and raisins, or have some peanut/other nut butter on apple halves/celery sticks....

Totally agree with Hurdity (hope you're ok?) that doing too much before topping up the tank with more fuel has resulted in me feeling incredibly weak and wobbly to the point of nausea.

Hope it passes for you Roobee and you start to feel some of the good things soon!!

Thank you 🥰 I’m on the conti, so can’t really say which one causes it 🤷🏻‍♀️
Been worse today and I’m starting to wonder if it’s anything to do with patch changes. The one I changed this morning had been on for 4 days instead of 3 like the other one.
I also hope something positive happens soon, but I know it’s early days 🤞🏻

Thank you for your input xx

Roobee, can you maybe try changing the patches at 3.5 days each?  That might help a bit with hormone stability.  Some of us find we need to change what should be twice weekly patches every 3 days to keep levels up.

I have done 2 much in the garden a few times this weekend  :-\ - cuppa to hand and a cake with custard.  That'll do until our evening meal.

So sorry to hear you're not feeling better. I hope the blood tests results will be helpful. Are you feeling tired and wobbly all the time?

The last paragraph: Estradiol can increase insulin sensitivity, meaning that more glucose will leave the blood and enter the cells, causing a temporary decrease in glucose blood levels (hypoglycaemia). If this is what's happening a rapid intake of simple sugars could restore the levels and reverse the symptoms. This is just a test to confirm that you have transient hypoglycaemia.

Thanks Sage, no not all the time, seems to be worse in the afternoon/evening. Wake up feeling quite refreshed and ok then it comes on later in the day.
Doesn’t really seem to improve much with food intake, I haven’t tried something really sugary because I was afraid that was the wrong thing to do. So you are saying try eating some sugary crap and see if it goes?
