What shall I ask for?
« on: September 08, 2020, 04:29:39 PM »

Very long story short. Am 44. Been struggling with peri symptoms for 3 years. On meno clinic advice I have tried combined pill..... About 6 different ones.... All give me terrible side affects (but used to be on the pill fine}

Now trying nuvaring and I'm on day 10 and I've had terrible moods and heads for last 4 days.... I'm not prepared to keep trying.

So next stop is hrt. I cavt pretend I'm not scared. There are so many options out there.

Given my terrible experiences with the pill, I don't want to try a pill. So patch or gel I would prefer.

I suspect they will suggest patch with estrogen and prog..... But I'm thinking, with all the issues I've already encountered, these progesterones are the same.

So, what happens with the gel? What do you match it with??? Other than mirena. I don't want to try mirena yet.... All these bad experiences, I need something I can stop immediately.

I'm in Scotland and not sure utrogestan is allowed?

And also, what to avoid because of intermittent supply issues?

Do you keep a mood/food/symptom diary to chart symptoms?  That might be of use .........

OK. Thank you.

So, given my terrible experiences with 6 different contraceptive pills, I'm thinking of asking for gel.

Im a little confused by the whole hrt thing - so you take the gel continuously???? And the progesterone for 2 weeks? And u have to have a period????? Do you stop estrogen at any point to have the period?

I was having a terrible time both on the pill, but also during any breaks, so I'm keen to avoid hormonal dips.

I'm speaking to doc in 2 weeks. During those two weeks I've come off all hormones, see where I am. Am very scared.....

Hi CrispyChick - it can all seem very confusing but you take oestrogen continuously and add in the progesterone for the second half of the cycle. When you stop the progesterone at the end of the 12 days you can then expect a bleed as this is triggered by the stopping of the progesterone and is called a withdrawal bleed. With me, on patches, it was about three days after stopping the progesterone part. Not all women get a bleed.

You will need to try for at least three months before you can tell if it suits you. Side effects such as headaches, period type pains, sore breasts and maybe heavy or painful periods etc.  usually subside by the end of the three months. I know it can be difficult to keep on with it if you are feeling ill but you can turn to us for support during this time and the end result will be worth it. Let us know how you get on.
