Here we go again 

A leaked government report suggests a "reasonable worst case scenario" of 85,000 deaths across the UK this winter due to Covid-19.

The document also says while more restrictions could be re-introduced, schools would likely remain open.

But it says the report "is a scenario, not a prediction" and the data are subject to "significant uncertainty".

However some are critical of the modelling and say some of it is already out of date.

The document, which has been seen by BBC Newsnight, was prepared for the government by the Sage scientific advisory group, which aims to help the NHS and local authorities plan services, such as mortuaries and burial services, for the winter months ahead.

Among its key assumptions are that schools will remain open and that the government's tracing, isolation, and quarantine measures will only be 40% effective in cutting the spread of Covid outside households.

Maybe that's why some people I know are C.mas shopping ?

Interesting...same might be true here as well.  They are predicting another wave in the winter months but not as bad as the first and not antipating another lockdown.  Add to that, cold and flu season, which can be bad without having to deal with covid.  The powers that be don't really know what to expect, it depends on how vigilant and conscientious the public will be.   
I usually don't get the flu shot (makes me feel awful) but after getting really sick with the flu over Christmas and being scolded by my GP, I will get it this year.

I used to pay for the flu vacation, when I was working.  However one year I developed a nasty kidney infection not long after.  Don't know if there is any connection but it really put me off.  Our immune system is best not messed with unless absolutely necessary.

I don't know if I will have the flu vac this year.  As for covid, the speed it's being developed is worrying.  No vaccine is 100% safe, but one with no proper testing data is very concerning.

It's no good distroying the virus if the patient still dies.

I have had the flu jab for several years with no ill effects and intend to get it this year too. Will probably have the Covid one too as long as I don't suspect it  to be a Russian version!

I don't think, due to isolating and face masks, that many people will get 'flu this Winter.  Have you heard of anyone having the common cold?  MayB people haven't dared admit to it?

I don't believe in chemicals in the body unless absolutely necessary.  If we knock out 1 virus then others step in.  I had 'flu in March 1988 and March 1989 - never since.  My MinL was persuaded in the 1980s to have the 'flu jab - never ever having had the virus - she was ill each time.  The 3rd year she couldn't move for 3 days ......... she lived alone and BinL happened to call in and found her really ill.  GPs at that time were being paid a tenner a shot ........ she never had it again so didn't suffer side effects.

Hopefully the Nightingale Hospitals will remain so that any one requiring treatment can take use of them.  It's time that the 'health' service was up and running to full capacity.

The flu vaccine is a 'live'vaccine and some shielders/ medically vulnerable people can't have it due to medications they are taking, my hubby is one that cannot have live vaccines. I don't doubt for a moment we will have a second wave, some people just carrying on as if it wasn't around. So many people still not wearing masks . I understand we cannot close down the world for ever and we will be a long time recovering from this. I dont think I would have a covid vaccine at the moment, because I don't see how we can tell what the long term effects could be, we are still trying to work out how this virus behaves. I still continue to go out as little as possible but I do have to shop for food etc. I would say I'm a bit ott sometimes but I try to keep my hubby as safe as I can. It does scare me.
Clkd - I put money away each month from January for Cmas, my sons have money as their main pressie and  If I see something in the year I buy it and put it away. Im always  finished by end October!

The adult flu vaccine is inactivated not live as far as I know?

Hi Penguin99. It seems your hubby has been given wrong information and should check this with his GP. It's important he's protected if he's had to shield.

Thanks,  when he had to have his hepatitis injection so he could start his treatment the nurse at the docs said it was live I will check
Just googled, I see what you mean. Speaking to his consultant soon so will ask

The nasal spray version is definitely live.

Sometimes if the immune system is compremissed flu vaccination is ineffective.  It's the immune systems interaction with the vaccine which produces antibodies.  If the immune system is too weak the result is poor.

Yes hubby's immune system is compromised,  just googling a bit more and it says he must not have the 'live' version ,  but on reading further it says about an inactivated vaccine.  I have no medical knowledge and went off what we were told, last winter when he was at the day unit, flu vaccine was mentioned and he was told he couldn't have it  . Definitely need to look into this. Thanks all, we wouldn't of known. It can be very dangerous for him if he catches it. What a nightmare
I had swine flu, omg awful, thought I was going to die. Had to take tamiflu, it took weeks to get over, wouldn't wish it on anyone

I'm sorry you have all of this worry Penguin. My friend has secondary cancer and had to shield due to her immune system but has been advised to have the flu jab as she also did last year.

I'm hoping there's an egg-free option as that's what's prevented me having it in the past due to an egg sensitivity.
